I am so excited!! We just bought a camper and we are driving down to Ft. Wilderness for a vacation. We will be there from Dec 9th to the 14th to enjoy the holiday decorations. We have been to disney at least 11 times and we have never stayed at the campground. Any advice or pointers would be appreciated. We are coming from New Hampshire, so route help would be appreciated.

Can't wait to see the campground.

:welcome: we think the Fort is one of the best (or maybe the best;)). What type of RV did you get? We will be there the 10 days before you, leaving on the 7th. Hope you have a great trip, and the first of many pixiedust:

1) Congrats.
2) Y'all come over and say hello.
3) We will be at cabins 11th-thru-20th.
4) Just look for a BIG banner on cabin reading "CANCER FREE!".

Welcome to the camping family. Can guarantee you will be back. The Fort truly feels like home. Leave time in your trip to enjoy the activities at the Fort. The campfire and movies at night are great. Bring your bikes if you can a great way to see the whole campground.

Be sure to leave a day to explore and do activities at The Fort. Esp the fireworks and EWP from the beach.

Thanks to you all! We just sold our pop up camper and bought an Keystone Outback 210 with a slide out on the back. We haven't even picked it up yet!

We will stop by and say hello!

Has anyone tried the canoe rentals or the nature trails? What is the grocery selection like at the outposts?

Can't help you on the canoe rental but I can tell you the grocery items are very limited and expensive. Their selection is like most camping stores, milk, bread, hot dogs, etc.

We usually go to Wal-mart (I think on Turkey Lake Drive). Using a couple of back streets, it is very convenient to the Fort. Others use a delivery service such as Garden Grocer.

We did the canoe and kayak rentals this past March 2012. It was a pleasant cool morning experience. We found the Fort Wilderness Railroad tracks over by loop 300. We left the Bike Barn and paddled around by the pool, tennis courts, past loop 1500, hung a left, went down by the dog park, and back between 400-500-600 to the Bike Barn. That last stretch had some logs/trees fallen in the water but it was passable. I MUCH prefer the round trip paddle rather than the out-and-back.

It lasted a little over 30 minutes, the Fort CMs were generous and rounded our time down. It's less than $10 per 30 minutes and they have all the life jackets, paddles, etc. We saw turtles, birds, but no gators. If the water level is down low the 400-500-600 stretch may be shallow but if you are in the least inclined to try canoeing this is the time to do it.

PS - this is one of the Fort activities I love! ::yes::

Hi neighbor! We are fairly close to you in NH. We will be there in the beginning of Dec.Have been there many times and truly enjoy the fort!! You will see why...Hopefully staying in the 1800 or 1900 loop! :thumbsup2

Hey Katherine. Groceries are expensive at the Outpost. Just the basics, Milk, eggs, lunch meat, OVERPRICED wine, spirits and lots of snacks. You are going to have a great time at Fort!!

We will be there too. See you in December!!

Dave

If you need some quick items the Hess stations are cheaper than WDW prices. Ice especially.

We have never been in December and we are very excited. What route do you take from NH? We have never driven and could use some advice. Thinking of leaving the Concord area around 5:30pm and drive until we are tired then hit a Walmart parking lot...

You will love it. We have camped at the Fort in a tent and our pop-up, loving both trips. Be sure to get a take out chicken bucket at Trails End and head to the beach for the parade or the Chip and Dale movie. There is a playground across the walkway from Trails End that your son will enjoy. Hope you have a good drive and fantastic trip!

Happy to here you upgraded your rv, the route we take is all about timing, you can take a straight shot though NY(95) if you get there before 5am, then the rest is easy, a couple of slow downs here and there and no real hills to worry about. To take another route you might run into hill. Depending on your pull vehicle you could run into some hard pulling. What r you pulling your rv with?
We leave before 3am from our house and get through NY and take our first stop on the Jersey Turnpike. My kids love getting up that early so they can sleep in the car...
Happy traveling and you will love the fort.

We have done the canoeing and paddle boating loved both:thumbsup2, but the water mice at the marina are an absolute blaaaaaaaaaaaast!!!!!:cheer2:

We have a Silverado 1500 heavy half-ton. The trailer is only 4,700lbs. I have hauled horses to VA with it. My trailer with the two Friesians fully loaded for a week was well over 6,000lbs.

Worried about going over the GW bridge.

Hi, Here is the way to go. Take 495 to 290 to 90,then 84 to Scranton Penn. then 81 south to RT 66 in Va. then 17 south to 95 south then follow all the way to RT4 WEST to Orlando. Then follow the signs to Disney. Watch for the signs to Ft Wilderness . By taking this route you will avoid the tunnel on 95 that you can not go thru and there will be no tolls except one when you get on the Mass Pike!
We pull a motorhome w/tow vehicle and it takes us 2 1/2 days arriving at the fort early on the third morning.
