We all felt sick after Mission Space

:guilty: We are a family of 4, my husband age 52, Me (Mom) 51, college daughter 24, and teen daughter 16. We all rode Mission Space about 4 pm. last week for the first time. I hated it. We all hated it.
You're in this little compartment that's supposed to resemble an astronaut's seat. The actual ride wasn't fun for any of us at all. It just felt awful. I suppose we were upside down for a good deal of the ride, because that is probably how we felt such intense pressure on our faces (supposed to feel like 'blast-off'. There are even paper bags next to you, in the ride, in case you get sick on the ride.
I just feel like warning everybody. It just made me mad to go on a Disney ride and then feel sick for the rest of the day until going to sleep at night. My husband and I both had terrible headaches :badpc: and sinus pressure in the middle of our foreheads for the rest of the day and night. My 2 daughters were able to shake it off after a few hours. But none of us felt like eating dinner or even snacks.
None of us will ever go on this ride again, and we are not sissy riders. We all do Tower of Terror and Rock'n Roller Coaster over and over. We even do Star Tours and it only bothers us for about 15 minutes afterwards. But I just think Mission Space is a horrible ride. We had such high hopes for that day at Disney, and this ride ruined our day.
:guilty:
I would like to hear from anyone about your experience. Does anyone ever go on it again? Does anyone really enjoy it?

I'm sorry you had problems. You were never upside down, you were in a centrifuge. There are warning signs all over the place about motion sickness and enclosed spaces. It affects everyone a little differently. My 80yo Mom and I ride it several times during each of our WDW visits and actually find the sensation relaxing.

I cannot ride ANYTHING that goes in circles, even Cindy's Carrousel, and I take Bonine before going to the parks each day. However, DD (age 11) absolutely ADORES Mission:Space, and will ride it (via the single rider's line) several times in a row. DH also enjoys it, but can only ride once. BIL, who is a flight attendant, enjoys it also. Sorry you felt sick. I can empathize/sympathize...that's how I feel any time I try to ride things like Splash Mountain, BTMRR, Dumbo, etc.

My husband (47) and son (10) loved it. I felt woozy, but was ok within about 30 minutes. I won't ride again, however my DH and DS are planning to ride it on our next trip.

There were 4 in our group, 2 men, 38 and 45 and 2 women, 58 and 45 and we all loved it! First time for the women who were terrified from all the stories but had to try it and we would all defintely do it again.

Wow - so sorry you had a bad experience. We loved it - but I have heard people not feeling well after for a while.

I'm sorry to hear you didn't like Mission: Space. I guess it's not for everyone, which is why they have all those warnings at the beginning.

As for me, it is one of my very favorite rides ever. I've been on it 7 times so far, and I've never felt the slightest bit sick. I love the sensation of "taking off," to me it feels like a big tummy tickle. DH and my two DS's (ages 13 and 15) rode it several times in June, and they all loved it and never felt sick. My friend Helen rode it with me twice last week and she felt fine both times. We rode with two strangers both times, and I was worried about someone getting sick, but both times the people we rode with liked the ride and said they felt fine.

Unfortunately, I guess there's no way to know ahead of time who will feel bad after this ride. I hate it that this happened to you.

I'm sorry you and your family were sick from MS. We rode it several times in Jan and did not get sick from the ride. I do know that the ride does make certainly ppl sick. If you get dizzy on star wars you probably should not do MS. Hopefully the rest of your trip was great!

I went on Mission:Space with three friends of mine when we went in July. I get horrible motion sickness and I took two Bonines every morning, regardless of what park we were going to and what rides we were going on. But of course, the morning we go to Epcot to specifically ride TT and MS, I forget. I pop the pills a half hour before we went on (you're supposed to allow an hour for the pills to kick in). Waiting in line was gut-wrenching. I kept seeing signs and hearing the CMs warning about motion sickness and I was getting really nervous. During the actual ride, my friends were fooling around, turning their head, pretending to get sick, etc but I was hardcore. I stared striaght ahead and I think I only blinked twice during the entire ride. I was a little dizzy for like 10 minutes afterwards but I think it was all nerves. I enjoyed the ride but its not one of my favorites. I think the key is motion sickness pills and staring straight ahead.

I rode it last Nov. 2003 and got sick but I waited until the end of the day to ride as I thought I may get sick (I do get motion sickness from things that spin like the Teacups). I wanted to experience it at least once and did but I won't be doing it again. Like you, I also felt off (or at least somewhat on a tilt), had a headache (which is a sure sign that I'll eventually have a protein splill) and began sweating a little by the time I got to my room. I certainly hope that future Disney rides don't follow in the same path as this one.

I rode mission space for the first time last March with my DS7. We both thought it was cool! We didn't feel sick at all and we rode it two times in a row that day for a total of 5 times during the trip. I have read that it has bothered some people but we just weren't one of them. Of course my son actually prefers rides that have him upside down :earboy2: Sorry to hear your family had such a bad experience.

Wow, it's good to know there are others that can "take" this ride without getting sick. I did take Dramamine about 30 minutes before, but it still didn't help. Thanks for letting me know about the 'going in circles.' I cannot ride things that go in circles fast. I can ride Dumbo, but don't do things like the Tea-cups. We love Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Space Mountain. I don't remember reading any signs, but I remember an announcement about claustrophobia. I just figured if it's a Disney ride, it probably isn't that bad! Silly, trusting, me! ha ha
Oh well, never again!

I'm sorry that you felt so bad after the ride. It really can't be compared to RnR or ToT though. I think you were more correct in comparing it to StarTours. My DH rode it with me shortly after it opened and he won't ever ride it again. He was prepared on how sick he would probably feel afterwards though because StarTours and the TeaCup ride also causes him problems. He did shake it off after an hour or so. I loved it however and rode it again just a few weeks ago with my kids. We are ages 40, 19, 14 and 8. I actually thought that they toned the ride down quite a bit since it originally opened. None of us experienced any discomfort afterwards. I imagine that it does affect alot of people though and that's why you hear the warnings given over and over again and can opt out of the ride even at the last minute.

wow really?? Did you close your eyes by the way? My husband did though how he missed all the don't close your eyes signs i don't know. My kids and I loved it! My 7 year old rode at least 4 times. We even rode 3 times in a row!

I have never had any problems with Mission Space, even after eating. I LOVE it! What a cool experience. However, there are many who have a loss of equilibrium resulting in dizziness and nausea after riding. That may be attributed to eating or drinking before riding, too many alcoholic beverages before riding, not keeping your eyes firmly glued to the screen in front of you, or just not being able to tolerate spinning rides. My whole family rides it without incident, although the 1st time my DD rode it, she hated it, but after going on it again, she loves it. But you are not alone. Sorry you didn't like it, but at least you tried it, and now you know.

Have a happy New Year!

This is what happen to a friend of ours after MS - he didn't listen to me when I told him about cramming 3 eggs down his mouth!!!

At the beginning of the ride you tilt backwards (not upside down) and then go back upright before long.

Like Chuck, my mom (81yo) liked the ride and after the first time commented that it wasn't long enough (and I was worried about her feeling sick).

There are lots of warnings about spinning, along with other warnings, but a person never knows how they will react to the centrifugal force type spinning of M:S. Some people can't take that ride and they were doing a "clean up on aisle 3" when we were getting ready to board recently. Yuck!

My reaction during take off my very first time (when I was riding with strangers) was to laugh out loud since it was such a different and strange sensation.

I feel bad for the people who feel sick since it can really ruin a whole day.

T&B

I was worried about this on our trip this past week. I don't do the teacups without feeling sick, so I knew this would probably be a one shot deal. DH and kids never have a problem with spinning, so I figured I would be the one out of it after the ride.

I stared straight ahead, never closed my eyes.

I had a headache after, and needed to sit with a cool drink to shake it off. DH, though, had it worse, and took longer to feel back to normal. So it is not necessarily dependent on who handles other kinds of spinning rides.

I did love the visuals of the takeoff, slingshot, and landing. I might do it again, since I have two years to wait, but I'm not sure DH will.

I enjoyed it,but I didnt think it was the big thrill ride it was made out to be.
Considering the woman in our capsule with us threw up, I just couldnt wait to get out of there. I dont know if Id ride it again, just for fear of that happening again. It was my worst fear about the ride to begin with, but I figured the chances were slim...and then it happened. Thank God for the barf bags!!!
