We'’re out of it! … A summer 14 “MAGICal” Med adventure Day 14/Aug 05 updated 05/05

Day 5, July 27

Not quite as planned, but fun none the less! - Part 2

We were some of the first ones on, so we were able to choose a seat and wait for the boat to leave.

It was amazing to see how many people fit onto those tenders. A few minutes after we had sat down we were off

and quickly reached the port, where we all disembarked and headed towards the town center of Villefranche.

Tom and I had decided to take the train to Monaco and were now slowly walking along the beach towards the train station.

The village is cute and we stopped ever so often to take a photo.

To be continued ..........

We are back from our Princess cruise, and I'm finally caught up here. Took me a while to catch up because I came home so tired I fell asleep every time I tried to read. :earseek: When I come home that tired, it usually means I had a great time, and I certainly did have a great time on this cruise! Did some of the most beautiful scuba dives I've ever done. I just need more recovery time than I did when I was in my younger years. :confused3:rotfl2:

Sorry to hear you had bad smells in your room. I would hate that! I wish Disney had done a better job of addressing the various stateroom issues I've been hearing about during the drydock. Instead, they replaced a chandelier that didn't need replacing with one that isn't nearly as nice as the one it replaced. :confused3

I noticed you have an update on your other review in addition tomthis one. I'll have to get to it tomorrow since I seem to be falling asleep again.....

Love the updates(2) since I last read your report. Waiting to hear more about the day!!

Nice they are refunding the change fee.

MMMM, keylime margarita sounds good.

Smell in the room is not good.

Love the pics of the French coast.

What a great place to visit. Looks so pretty.

I don't have a lot of time (no internet at mom's), but Monaco is beautiful...love the pictures.

Wow! You just got in and are already back on the boards. It usually takes me a few days to be able to do that. :rolleyes1
And I am glad to hear that you had such a great time on your Princess cruise. :thumbsup2

Yeah, it was not the best start and there was not much they could do about it. They already had the air on all day to ventilate, but it still left a bit of a smell. We did handle it ourselves lateron in the cruise. :rotfl2:
They did a pretty good job on some of the public areas, but we found a lot of issues that we thought would have been addressed during dry dock. By the way they made it sound in their publications you would have thought that this would be a "brand new" ship. :rotfl2:

I am trying to wrap up the rest of my TRs as well. Especially since I want to start planning on our upcoming trip for Tom's birthday. :goodvibes

Love the updates(2) since I last read your report. Waiting to hear more about the day!!

Great to know that you enjoy the TR. It was a fun vacation, even with the issues we had. :goodvibes
More coming up shortly!

The Key Lime Margarita was really yummy. I really wish they would offer it on other cruises as well. :thumbsup2
No, the smell was rather annoying, especially the longer we knew that it was there the more I started to smell it. :rotfl2:
The French Riviera is a beautiful place to visit. We have been there and seen it from the "land" side before, and it was awesome to see it from the sea.

I can't wait to hear about Monaco!

I hope you will not be disappointed ....... ;)

Hi Karin,
I am so excited to start reading along!!!!
I miss you so much!!!!

Michelle, we are missing you and your family too! We cannot wait to see you again. :woohoo:

You are not late at all. I am only at day 5 of 27!!

Love those pics of Monaco. Waiting for more.

It was awesome seeing Monaco from the water. But Villefranche was nice as well. :thumbsup2

I don't have a lot of time (no internet at mom's), but Monaco is beautiful...love the pictures.

Seeing the French riviera from the sea was just so awesome. Villefranche was really beautiful, once we made it there. The house were all up the hill and the view was stunning.

Day 5, July 27

Not quite as planned, but fun none the less! - Part 3

The village is cute and we stopped ever so often to take a photo.

There is a long steep flight of stairs up to the railway station

and we were up at the top a train was just leaving. We were not worried as I had looked up the schedule and it had shown a train running to Monaco every half hour. There was a long line of people inside buying tickets and it took us about 15 minutes until it was our turn.
I got our return tickets, then asked about the next train to Monaco. It was not until an hour and a half. Silly me had not taken into consideration, we were travelling on a Sunday. :rolleyes1
We headed outside and quickly contemplated what to do and decided to just walk back into the village for some time until our train was to depart. It was now half past 11 and our train was not leaving until shortly before 1am.
We walked along a path high above the waterline until we reached the center, where we browsed some of the shops.

It was hot and we both were tired already and very thirsty, so we decided to find a restaurant and have a drink and maybe a bite to eat as breakfast had not been the best.
We passed several restaurants that did not offer indoor seating until we found one that had both, indoor and outdoor seating, the La Fille du Pêcheur. We were the only ones who wanted to sit inside.
The server was very nice and brought our drinks out right away, which we finished really quickly and reordered right away. Then we started to have a look at the menu and while we were still weighing options, we were served an amuse gueule,

white bread, topped with sautéed onions and cheese, which had then be toasted under a grill. It tasted really heavenly and we knew we had picked a good restaurant. But I didn’t feel like anything fancy, but had my heart set on a

Deep Fried Mozzarella Sticks basket, while Tom was far more adventurous and ordered the

Exotic salad bowl with grapefruit, orange, fresh pine apple shrimps and avocado. It took a while for our food to arrive and time was ticking away. Once we were served our food, we knew that we only had two choices, either “speed eat” and hot foot it up to the station again, or forget about the visit to Monaco.
It was an easy decision to dump the idea of going to Monaco in favour of a nice leisurely lunch and a stroll through Villefranche, especially since we both had been to Monaco before.
So we took our sweet time to cool down and enjoy our lunch. And since we now had more time, we decided that if we were in France we needed to have a crepe for dessert. The restaurant offered several different ones which all sounded wonderful and in the end Tom ordered the

Crepe with Grand Marnier, while I ordered the

Crepe with Caramelized apples Flambed with Calvados & served with cinnamon ice-cream. Both were huge, well cooked crepes, which tasted heavenly. When we were were done with our dessert and had paid the bill we took a quick restroom break before heading out into the sun again. We walked back to the center where there was a huge castello and while we walked we were passed by one of those little sightseeing trams.
It was hot and we did some window shopping and when we got to the tourist information we walked inside to ask where the train was going to leave from. It was leaving from right outside the tourist office, just a few meters up the hill. When we finally found it, the train had just arrived and we asked the driver when the next tour would be. It was supposed to start in 45 minutes. Good, we headed back into the village, but it was pretty hot, so after a few minutes we headed up the hill again, where the little train was parked and decided to wait it out in the little street Café.

They had ice-cream sundaes, so I ordered a

Coupe Danmark, which was vanilla ice-cream, peaches and whipped cream, while Tom tried the

Monaco beer. We also ordered a

bottle of water. Tom enjoyed his funny looking beer while I worked hard to make a dent into my sundae, but I was not very successful. That sundae was HUGE. We spent about half an hour sitting there, enjoying the view while people watching. Then it was time to head to the little train as the proposed time had come.

To be continued ..........

Well that didn't work out as planned, but it looks like you still had a lot of fun and delicious food.

No, it didn't work out as planned, but we had such a fun time anyway and since we have been to Monaco a few times we weren't sad about not going. :lmao:

The fisherman's daughter looks like a great choice! And well worth it to not go to Monaco! I am surprised that a Coup Danmark is with peaches on France. Isn't it usually vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce? Sitting in the street cafes is one of the best things in France in my opinion.

I hope your tourist train tour turned out well! But somehow I am afraid that there was another issue about train departing times...

Sometimes changing plans is a good thing and everything looks delicious (so much so that I now have to start dinner which I wasn't going to start for another hour but I'm hungry now).

Hi Karin -

I'm finally back on the boards and slowly catching up. I read your last two updates and I have to say that the town looks beautiful. Sorry the train to Monaco plans didn't work out as you had hoped, but it looks like you are going to get there eventually.

In the meantime, you really did get to sample some yummy looking food and the pics of the city of just lovely.

We did love our first cruise on the Dream. Our servers and stateroom host were delightful. I thought of you as we passed the cabanas. What a beautiful retreat.
