So, I'm just back from my first ever DL trip. Here were my threads leading up to the trip: Lilly Belle?, Taxi to and from SNA, and Balanced approach for first-timer WDW vets?

Those are just for reference sake to see how everything turned out. First, let me say we had a wonderful time and had ample time to do everything that we wanted to and more. This is kinda going to be another "comparison/anti-comparison" thread for the curious.

1) The planning; I actually did more planning for this trip than I normally do for WDW, since I've been so many times to Florida. Normally I'll pick perhaps one FP per day that I "have" to do and maybe one sit-down restaurant per trip to the World. With this first trip and being a WDW vet, there's no way to not plan IMO, as one feels the urge to plan even if one doesn't need to. (Ha!) However, I do feel my level of planning paid off. I used the 2016 Disneyland guide, Disboards, and Disneyland Daily to plan and it worked out really well. And, I think here is the comparison key; if I were to go back to DL then I would not have to plan nearly as much, and yes, it would be less than even my typical WDW vacation. If you are a first-timer though, I do think you need to plan.

1a)
Absolute best advice: Go early... like 45 min before park open if you can manage. Just hanging out at the gate is fun.

2) The flight; we flew by way of Denver and Orange County (John Wayne Airport - SNA), and both airports and flights were enjoyable. I'm so very happy we chose SNA to fly into, and would highly recommend that. It was a little strange not to be flying into Orlando and taking the ME, and this is the first thing that reminded me of our "old school" trips before ME...

3) Transportation: Getting to the Grand Californian. So, we chose to stay at Grand Californian for many reasons, some of which I'll get to. After weighing all the options, we chose to grab a taxi and I'm extremely glad that we did. There were taxi's on hand, and ours was very clean, polite, professional, and proficient. It was $41.00 there without gratuity and we made it in 20 min, $40 voucher for return trip, made it in 20 min as well early in the morn. Clearly that is very different than my normal wait on ME, sitting on the bus, and 45 min to our hotel in WDW. We walked everywhere else.

4) The hotel; the Grand Californian was fantastic. We requested a renovated room and received it, standard view on the 6th floor. It was just as good or better than any level room I've stayed at in WDW save a Club level Castle view Poly. We had a view of the parking lot, but could see the Monorail go by and could glimpse DTD. Mousekeeping was excellent. The biggest difference that I saw here was in the hotel layout... because of where it was placed, it did kind of feel like a jigsaw puzzle piece with limited ways of maneuvering to where you wanted to go. It wasn't a "bad" thing necessarily but because of the placement restrictions it sometimes didn't feel like it had good "flow." Every light in our room had a dimmer, which I love, and the shower was fantastic, add to that I believe we were the first people to stay in our room since the reno and it was truly fabulous. I have to admit, I did miss having a food court.

5) The inevitable comparison; Ok, let me jump to the conclusion; IF I could swap DL with the Magic Kingdom I'd do it in a heart beat. The detail and layout are simply amazing. Main Street stole our hearts. Having said that, I'm not going to lie, everything everyone says about the castle is true... it is very wee. I say that with a lot of new found affection, but it is wee, there's no other word that so wonderfully captures it. It is disorienting for a WDW vet to not be able to just glance up and see the castle. Never-the-less, I'd steal DL. Notice, however, that I said I'd like to swap DL with MK and yes, put it in the rest of WDW. Why? I'll say up front; EPCOT is my park and is still my park, and if I could have DL with it, then I'd have perfection. lol I missed EPCOT.

6) The attractions; all the old-school rides were fantastic and we had a ball on all of them. I did love Carsland, and RSR's as well. Pirates was awesome, and definitely has one up on WDW. It was very cool to get off of one ride and go right on another in a matter of steps. To me, DCA was comparable to AK or DHS, it was never a full day park for us. We would “dip” into DCA, but spent the bulk of our time at DL (get park hoppers!).

7) The Characters; fantastic interactions. This was one of the most cool aspects; the characters would appear out of nowhere and not get swamped in an out of control way. At WDW everything is very orchestrated in a forced kind of way with the characters, here it was again "old school" and very neat. You’d turn a corner, and there would be Spiderman skipping down the street… literally.

8) Dining; IMO, the food in DL was superior to that in WDW. Getting in restaurants was a lot easier... and I will dream of a cherry malt and fried pickles from the Carnation Cafe. There were much more healthy choices as well, as I tend vegetarian/pescatarian.

9) Shopping; It was very similar to WDW, the only real difference was having DTD right there. Also they were really great about asking for anything that would give a discount, such as being an AP holder.

10) Restrooms; I felt the cleanliness of the restrooms was the same, but the restrooms in DL take the prize for decor. (And, yes, our fam talks about Dis restrooms a lot LOL) Also, they were well marked, so plenty of signage you could spot...

11) The live entertainment at DL blows WDW entertainment out of the water. It was truly awesome to hear live bands in so many different places in and around DL and DCA. Fantastic. Special shout out to “Sligo Rags” at the Paradise Garden Bandstand. The “Remember…” fireworks at DL were very good, almost as good as “Wishes” used to be at WDW. What they say is true; if you want to see them, try starting your first night there, as they do get cancelled last minute even for wind (you can’t tell if they will cancel or not from a breeze you feel, they will announce it). World of Color Dessert Party was well worth it; loved the show!

12) I was worried about crowds before I went, as I’ve been in WDW during major holidays before, but choose not to go to those now because I can’t stand the crowds. DL is smaller, with narrower walk ways, and yes, it feels like there are a lot of people, but I found there was always a way to take a break from it if needed. The tables and shops were never packed, and I never got the feeling I did when there are crowds at WDW.

13) Misc. stuff; the CM’s are both more chill and more stern than at WDW. It was “odd” to see just how many locals there were working when you’re used to seeing name tags from all over the world in WDW. They didn’t take much crap from guests, but at the same time they seemed less like they were playing a part, and more like they were working a job they enjoyed most of the time. People seemed to take care of the park more (I know that’s not a “for sure” occurrence, but overall there seemed to be a pride about it). Do expect rides to break down. Don’t always rely on information from locals who have gone to DL many times, make sure to verify. What I mean by that is it seems that because it is a local hang out not everyone who has been a lot is a Disneyphile. There were several locals we talked to either on the flight or elsewhere that gave us wrong info that I knew was wrong because of my prior research and planning. (For example, one told us that the fireworks are hardly ever cancelled, but I knew from research that is not true, and indeed they were cancelled our first night.)

So, from finding the mezuzah on Main Street, to Patrick Begorra’s house, to Walt’s bench, the light in his apartment, riding Jingles, collecting pressed pennies, and eating a churro, and on and on…. Disneyland is made up of so many details and history that it is so worth going to for any Disney fan. We were able to tour the parks in our own way and enjoyed every minute of it. There are pro’s and con’s to DL and to WDW, so I don’t see it as a “versus” at all, but rather each park seems to enhance the other, IMO.

I'd be happy to answer any questions! I hope something out of here will help someone else out, or help make a decision!

Thanks for your review! We check in to the Grand Californian in less than 2 weeks. Only some of the rooms have been renovated? Did you spend anytime poolside?

Enjoy it! I don't think all the rooms are done yet, but could be wrong. They were also working on parts of the lobby but that didn't interfere with any hotel operations or the aesthetic, IMO, it was beautiful. We didn't do the pool as we only had 3 full days there, so wanted to stay in the parks as much as we could, but the pool looked really neat. When we did take breaks, we napped in the heat of the day, and then headed back out. I hope you have a great trip!

Where is the mezzuzah on Main Street? I have to see it!!

It is next to the arcade, on a doorpost (of course! lol) that is in a little nook. The door belongs to "Dr. Benjamin Silverstein." I've read that when Christmas decor goes up elsewhere, that you can spot a Menorah in his window as well during Hanukkah... It took us a bit of searching to find the mezuzah, but it is on "street level" on Main Street proper but the door is set back a bit, and may have one step up (I can't remember). Happy hunting!

What a great review! I really enjoyed reading about your experience. I think "wee" is a perfect word to describe Walt's castle. Yes, it's small compared to Cindy's castle, but it has SO much charm. I also agree that each resort just enhances the other!

When we go I like the castle at night. It looks much bigger at night.

Your review was very nice, Thank You. I love to hear the comparisons between the two.
While I've only been to DLR, I do hope to one day visit WDW.
However, it's a little far for me and my solo trips.
thanks again.

Yes, it is very charming, and I don't care what anyone may say; we loved the little walkthrough they have in the castle. We had a local tell us it was "corny" but we thought it was very well done with the story and animations. And, we loved Snow White's grotto off to the side.

Thank you! The castle also "grows" by walking closer to it, I know it's all about perspective (and that it's true for everything), but it really makes a difference in DL.

I hope you do get to go to WDW someday! I've solo'd it before and understand hesitating because of the distance (I don't know if I'll ever get back to DL), but it is worth it.

Great review, and interesting read for me. As I am complete opposite of you; going to WDW for the first time in september after decades of DL :). Glad you enjoyed DL!

Great report and sounds like a wonderful trip! I'd say you "get" Disneyland. Not everyone does, and that's just fine too, but it's always fun to hear when people do. You came, you saw DL's flaws - namely crowded walkways, ride breakdowns and cancelled fireworks - but didn't let that detract you from all the many more things that are so magical about Disneyland. pixiedust:
