WDW Spas - Recommendations requested.

Hi Aimee,
We'll be visiting WDW at the end of June and I'd like to arrange a spa treatment at SSR for my wife while the kids and I pool-hop (we're DVC members). Where can I find the complete list of treatments available at SSR and what would you recommend for a 'newbie' to spas? I know there is a 4-hour package for DVC members but I'm not sure if that would be a good idea for someone who has never visited a spa before. thanks!

We get A LOT of first timers choosing the DVC package. It's a great introduction to a 'spa' experience.. a taste of several different treatments, the Mystical Forest Therapies (25 Minute Swedish Massage and 25 minute reflexology treatment, Mystical Forest Body Masque and Wrap, a Hydrotherapy treatment, and an Aromatherapy Facial.

If you're not sure about being there for all those treatments, and you have the means to maybe schedule a swedish massage at the beginning of your trip... get a feel for the spa and then decide to schedule the package for later in your trip. DVC members get 20% off of the Swedish massage. I think you'll be back ;)

We don't do hair and make up at Saratoga. Maybe you could schedule the hydrotherapy for the night before? It REALLY makes you sleep well! Great for tossing and turning and nerves the night before a wedding!

Aimee K,
I have had massages & facials before but never a body wrap. Can you describe the mud or algae wraps in any more detail than is given in the brochure? Trying to decide if i'd like to try something different at the spa or stick with something that i know i'll like!! Thanks for any input.

Hello Aimee - I misspoke - it was a full day at the GF. It consisted of the normal full day stuff... including the lunch. First the bad:

Eating lunch in the middle of the external shopping part of the lobby was wrong.

The waiting lobby was too small.

The steam room, whirlpool, sauna area was too small and the clear glass door to the waiting area impacted me negatively, although I can't remember how.

I believe when someone has a full day treatment they should not have to go back to that lobby, all the noise and people - hover about for 10 mins and then get shepherded back to the therapy areas. That waiting area could be so full at times there was no where to sit. There should be another area to make oneself comfortable while waiting for the next therapist. I realize that it could make logistics difficult, but for $500 or more, one should be not herded about as much as i was. This was especially irritating when i went back to the same room I had just left. I believe that was the transition from facial to massage. No sheets needed changed etc. it was a case of "Ok, rouse yourself, this treatment is done" - refreshing spray to the face (for the 3rd time) and back to the cattle room. tic toc "Hello, i'm your therapist, I'm taking you back for your massage" and by golly - it was the room I had just left.

SOMEHOW everyone who treated me that day should have known I was there for the whole day. I should not have had to tell each of them that. I blame the management. I am a little worried the SSR is owned / managed by the same people. I will say the appointments I made are no where near the full day that I would normally have done because of my fear that I would have the same mostly bad experience.

Can I make it clear enough? I doubt it. A spa should be a relaxing environment. The transition room should be better. If they insist on taking clients back and forth and forth and back that area needs improved. My day of relaxation ended up being short spurts of relaxation for a very hefty price.

GOOD STUFF -
The therapists. :goodvibes
It was not their fault that management had not done their bit to make the day feel like a full day of relaxation. Instead if felt like 6 or 7 different appointments all crammed together.

The treatments - all first class and individually well worth it!!! I would go there for a massage and pedicure again. Never will I do a full or even half day there.

If anyone needs a good example of good client transition management and waiting room and sauna etc... I can give many - my most recent being the spa at the Renaissance Chancery Court in London. I doubt anything that I can afford could ever mirror that. Their transition room is a therapy room unto itself.. individual chaise lounges, dim light, soft music, fruit and juice.. it was lovely to go to.

Thank you Aimee for soliciting more information. it would be lovely if something good might come out of this for future clients.

I had a similarly great experience at SSR as Ducky4Disney. Did the same treatment, and loved the fragrant oil. Personally, I like the massage part best, and like accupressure, but not for 1/2 of the treatment time. I intend to go back there again (especially loved the DVC 20% discount for certain treatments --- otherwise, this is too pricey) and would probably do the plain massage + the same oil.

The locker room was very large, comfortable, and clean. I took advantage of the whirlpool and sauna afterwards and really enjoyed that ......... just couldn't make myself leave after the relaxing treatment. The waiting room was nice, but I wasn't expecting to see men there.

I've had many massages and have definite ideas of what I'm looking for in a skilled masseuse, and the young woman I had was excellent. The treatment room was very well furnished and the table was the best I've ever been on. Music is very important to creating a mood for me, and even though this was piped in and everyone heard the same, it suited me just fine. I was very glad I treated myself.

SueOKW,
I am printing your comments and handing it to our upper management. I hope some change can come from it too. We as therapists want your experience to be as seemless and relaxing as possible too! I had a guest for three straight treatments yesterday, and thinking of you, I asked if she would like to enjoy them 'seemlessly', or if she would like a break in the lounge in between. She actually chose to go into the lounge to meet up with the rest of her party in between treatments. But I agree with you, lass movement would make for a more relaxing environment!

Thanks Aimee! I will be interested in their feedback. I think your offer to your client would certainly be gratefully accepted by me and others too if the circumstances were different. Thank you for being so receptive.

I am now looking forward to exploring SSR. With people like you working there I am sure it will be very nice.

Sorry it took a while to answer this one. I knew it would be longer than a 'quick' reply!

Our body wraps all start with body brushing to stimulate lymph flow and gently exfoliate your skin. We then do a lymph drainage style massage. Very gentle, rhythmic pressure. We apply the mask, mud or algae, and wrap you up. You'll get some type of facial massage or scalp massage, and then you relax and let the nutrients and minerals of the mud or algae do their magic. You will shower off, and a finishing lotion or oil will be applied.

The Marine Algae wrap has stunning results for your skin. It re-mineralizes, relaxes, and brings the body to homeostasis, or 'balance'. The smell of the actual algae can be a little off putting to some people. It's not 'bad', just a little ocean like. The effects are well worth it though! The Mystical Forest Mask and The Sleep in Beauty masks have really nice results too. The Sleep in Beauty mask is great for relaxation, detoxification, and moisturizing and soothing dry skin. The Mystical Forest Mask is regenerative, moisturizing, soothing and detoxifying also.

Hope this helps!

I enjoyed my visit at Saratoga Spa - just as I thought it was better than the GF. I feel the set up is better.

The service was great, and the treatments were awesome. I had a hot stone massage, paraffin wrap and a pedicure. No facials while I'm here - I want to be out in the sun and tan!

I highly recommend this spa.

So glad you had a nice visit with us tonight. You know, everytime I see a Sue or Susan on the schedule, I wonder if it was you, and tonight was no different! Wish I was able to give you one of your treatments, but I know you were in good hands!

We have had spa treatments at GF and while the therapists were wonderful the 2 receptionists were not friendly at all. They actually made me feel very uncomfortable while waiting for DH to finish his massage.

We have not been to SSR yet but I read a review over on mousesavers awhile back about how much more Mary liked SSR than GF.

I think everyone is very friendly at SSR. I did feel a bit put off by the receptionists at GF - but was more put off by the odd layout of the facility. As noted - therapists at both are great....

To rate my experiences between the two - - Sarasota is an A and GF is a C. Right before DI closed it was named one of the top spas by Conde Nast. It's still quite good, even though ownership has changed.

If you've been put off by GF - or are nervous about spas in general - SSR is a great place to start anew. Great experience.

I made an appointment for a massage at the GF in May. This will be my first disney spa experience. I don't really care if the waiting room is small, or if the experience is not 100 percent to my satisfaction, I just want someone to massage my shoulders! I have been dying for this for months! I guess it won't take much to make me happy! :teeth:

I have had lots of different spa treatments at GF and always had a fantastic and relaxing experience. My absolute favorite is the aromatherapy body wrap and massage. Unbelievable! BTW - I've also had this treatment at the spa at AKL and I was very impressed.

A big part of the enjoyment for me is the steam room, sauna and whirpool beforehand - that's where I think SSR shines - when comparing it to GF. I've not had lunch at SSR, so I can't comment on where they may serve their spa lunch. (That was probably the worst bit of the GF experience for me.)

One of my big problems is that I NEVER remember to tell the the therapist to focus on my back and shoulders.... They always ask and I never remember...

I did have a laugh this time with the Paraffin guy - i made my SSR ressies in the middle of an Ohio blizzard and all my treatments were heat related!!! They really did feel great - the paraffin treatment is GREAT GREAT GREAT!!! My skin is totally soft and refreshed.

Both spas are fine, really - - just don't do the spa lunch at GF unless you like to have people shopping all around you as you sit. <grin> Oh, and work with them carefully before you choose a whole day or half a day session....
