I have a picture of the inside of a room at the Polynesian from 1976. On the wall, there is a map of the WDW Resort. It shows MK, Bay Lake, Seven Seas Lagoon and the surrounding areas. The resorts are all visible on the map. There is a building that looks like a resort on Bay Lake (it is on the Northwest side of the lake, directly east of the Indy Race Car attraction at MK). This resort had a "Taj Mahal" look to it. There is also a resort where The Grand Floridian is now. I know that there were suppose to be additional resorts built in the 70's that were never built. I am assuming that the resort on the Grand Floridian property is the famed "Asian" that never made it past the "footprint" that was there for it. Does anyone know what the resort on Bay Lake was suppose to be? Disney must have been pretty certain that these resorts would come to be if they put them on a map of the property that was displayed in guest rooms. Does anyone else have pictures of this map?

You're right! The Asian Resort was supposed to be built where the GF now stands. Another resort was planned on the stretch of land between the Contemporary and the TTC, but said land was too unstable to support a heavy structure. T

Tikiman's site (tikiman2001.homestead.com) has pictures of the proposed Asian Resort. If I'm not mistaken, Floridian Way, the road b/w the Polynesian and GF, was called Asian Way until 1982.

It'd be great if you can scan the map and post it on this site!

Perhaps the picture below is the one you saw. I scanned this from an old, tattered souvenir book from the early 70s (not sure of the exact year, but it must be pre-1975, since there is not mention of Space Mountain in the book.) The legend for the map lists the resorts seen here labeled A, B and C as the future Asian, Venetian and Persian resorts, respectively. :groom:

Wow, what a great map. It makes you wonder what WDW would be like if all of that was actually completed. Thanks for the map

I stayed at the poly for the first time in 1972...I was only 5 but it made a huge impression on me. I know exactly what map you are talking about - it has always stuck in my mind and I wish I had a pic of it. I remember sitting on the bed after checking in just jumping out of my skin to get to the MK and looking at that map thinking of everything I was going to do.

Thanks for the great memories!!

Thank you so much, Calvinosaurus! That is the exact map in my picture! I couldn't tell that there were labels on the map, but it is so clear on yours. Thanks so much!!

Wow thanks for posting this, very interesting! It looks like they have the Contemporary marked as "B" and the legend says that it is the "Future Asian Resort-Hotel." Disney sure changed a lot of things after they printed this map. It would be interesting to know why.

That is such a neat map! I have never seen it (before my time :)) Thanks for sharing it..I love seeing old disney maps and photos.

Thanks for posting the legend! Wow, very interesting to read. Back then, you could swim in Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon. Now I think there are signs posted everywhere stating that there is no swimming allowed. I don't even remember the area between the Polynesian and where GF is now being called Surfrider Beach. That description was interesting.
