My family and I really want to attend MNSSHP this year, but are thinking of heading to DL instead of WDW. Most of the info I've read about has been at WDW, so I'm not sure if DL offers the same sort of event. I'm interested in how this party compares between the two parks. Has anyone gone to this party at both locations? How do they compare? I'm specifically interested in knowing if DL does a themed parade/fireworks? Do a lot of park guests dress up in costume? Are there special meet-n-greets? Which park is better in your opinion? Any help would be appreciated!!

Now THIS is a question I can really sink my teeth into! :cool1:

Just a little background....lived in NC for over 20 years. Would go to WDW for MNSSHP every year, sometimes to multiple parties during some trips. MNSSHP is my family's favorite Disney activity.

We moved to Washington State a couple of years ago. Still made our annual pilgrimage to MNSSHP, but with the kids getting older and the extended time and money necessary we decided to give DL a try in 2010.

For years the Halloween party had taken place at California Adventure, but they moved it to DL last year. They made the fireworks and parade elements of the party, rather than nightly events during October.

The DL party has many things in common with MNSSHP. There are dance stations, character meets, and trick or treat pathways. The atmosphere at both parties is terrific. They have the Halloween themed spotlights dancing around Main Street. The castles are all aglow with Halloween colors.

The fireworks are unique and both great. I prefer DL's version. They have Zero, from the Nightmare before Christmas, circling the castle and a giant moon that is used to project characters throughout the display. WDW's fireworks are throughout the park though, so the visual impact is amazing. Both are top-notch.

WDW has ONE thing over DL....the Boo To You Parade. This is by far the best parade around and DL's Character Calvacade pales in comparison. Comparing them really isn't fair. Many people think Boo To You is worth the price of admission alone. I agree.

Now DL has many things over WDW. First is the attraction overlays they do on the Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain. HM is changed into a Nightmare Before Christmas theme. Simply beautiful, inside and out. Space Mountain is turned into a thrill ride with the addition of ghost projections throughout the ride.

DL also has Halloween roundup at Big Thunder Ranch. It's an area that is country themed at DL. Lots of cool pumpkin displays and Halloween themed crafts are highlighted.

Now I still have my LOVE for MNSSHP, but Mickey's Halloween Party at DL is a worthy substitute. I actually like the overall atmosphere at DL better.

Remember though, DL doesn't release information as far in advance as WDW. It will be months and months before they made an formal announcements about this year's parties. This does make a trip difficult to plan, but parties are typically Tuesday or Friday in October.

Also a rumor that World of Color is getting a Halloween overlay is floating around. I hope this is true, since California Adventure had very little fall/Halloween decorations last year.

Last but not least, just remember that crowds are different at DL. Most visitors are tourists, so they tend to come to these parties for the nightime entertainment. The party feels more crowded because the common areas are narrower. The ride times were very low, even on a Friday near Halloween. Most rides were walk-ons.

Let me know if I can pass along more info. This is my FAVORITE subject afterall! :goodvibes

cha-ching!! Thanks ladies, I'll read through that mega post for sure!!! One more quick question, which I'm sure is probably answered in the mega post, but indulge me....do many people dress up in costume at DL? Is it allowed?

Thanks again!!

I thought there were many more people dressing up at DL. I was surprised/delighted to see so many adults joining the fun.

It's allowed for adults during the Halloween parties only, not the whole season unless you're a kid like always. My understanding is quite a bit of the adults do dress up. I know I will be this year.

These are the real differences.

Just wanted to add one thing. As DLR had the parties on Tuesday and Friday. WDW has them more times per week and over a longer duration. This causes some WDW guests some frustration planning a MK night around the ticketed nights.

However from the DLR Halloween popularity, this is increasing likely to take place on the west coast as well.

Thanks all for your helpful comments. I spent a good amount of time going through that Halloween megathread. That was very helpful indeed. I'm thinking all things considered the parties are pretty similar. Some differences I can see is that WDW runs the party starting in September, and also offers a greater variety of rare characters (i.e. the seven dwarves). Others have mentioned the parade is better at WDW as well, but we're not really interested in that. So I'm excited and looking forward to planning this trip out. Thanks again all!!

One comment from someone that has done MNSSHP many, many times and then went to DL for Halloween for the first time this past year, I agree with what has been previously posted. WDW has the Headless Horseman and that fabulous parade, which DL does not. DL has the NBC Haunted Mansion, which is incredible. DL gives out better and tons of more candy.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, and if you have the option, I think you should defintely check out DL at Halloween, at least once.

One more thought, DL seems to get more into the "Holiday" type foods. More Halloween treats and desserts. At Christmas they also have the hand-made candy canes and caramel hot chocolate, which WDW does not do.

I have to admit, I definitely missed the WDW parade and Headless Horseman this year though. If we go back to DL, I would miss the Haunted Mansion and Jack and Sally.

So true about the snacks/treats! I noticed this during Christmas time too. The little desserts in the holiday mugs, candy cane making, etc. Disneyland has so much charm. I've just fallen in LOVE with DL!
