Very sad news here folks...

I am thinking things will change now. Probably need like a collision warning system or something and my thought is that they will no longer allow people to sit in the front anymore.

Sad Day at WDW today.

Tracy

Tracy there were a few late tourists on board also. We like to ride in the front with the driver when we can, if those people were doing that they would have probably died also.

Walt Disney World monorail crash kills employee

ORLANDO, Fla. – Emergency officials say two monorail trains crashed in the Magic Kingdom section of Walt Disney World, killing one train's operator.

Bo Jones, deputy chief for Reedy Creek Fire Department, says one train operator died at the scene of the crash, which happened around 2 a.m. Sunday. The other train operator was not injured, but was taken to a hospital because he was emotionally shaken. Five park guests were treated at the scene.

Jones says it is unclear what caused the crash. Orange County Sheriff's officials are investigating the cause.

Jones says the crash happened at the park's ticket and transportation center. About a dozen guards wearing blue Disney security uniforms guarded the monorail station Sunday morning and prevented visitors from approaching the area.

Ethan Meus, who was visiting the theme park from Dubuque, Iowa, said he and his family took the monorail to dinner at a resort hotel Saturday night. Meus, 17, watched the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the monorail on the way back to his hotel, he said, and didn't notice any problems with the train.

"It's pretty shocking to hear that a driver was killed in that accident," Meus said.

The family was planning to take the train again Sunday to visit Disney's Epcot Center, but now planned to take a bus, Meus added.

"You would think it would be so safe," said 20-year-old Lauren Shoebottom, who was visiting the park from London. "You don't expect it on holiday, do you?"

Walt Disney World vice president of public affairs Mike Griffin issued a statement offering condolences to the employee's family and saying the monorail was closed.

"It's a bit shocking," said 22-year-old Danielle Williams, of London. "Disney seems so perfect."

The report said there were only 6 passengers on the train and they were all ok. In the video you see them.

Video is scary. Funny thing is when riding the monorail, they are very sure to stay far away from another train while it is station.

Updated info:

"Two Walt Disney World monorail trains collided early Sunday morning, killing the operator of one of the trains.

Walt Disney World spokesman Mike Griffin said the crash happened at about 2 a.m. Sunday, on one of the monorail's last runs of the day.

Austin Wenneberg, 21, a Disney employee who was piloting one of the monorails died at the scene of the accident, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said. One other employee was transported to Florida Hospital Celebration. The second driver's injuries were not serious, Griffin said."

"The trains were transporting guests leaving Epcot. Six park guests were on the train during the crash, and were evaluated by paramedics at the scene according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

According to park schedules, Epcot closed Saturday at 10 p.m.

The wreck is the first fatal accident in the Walt Disney World monorail system's almost 38-year history, according to CFNews13.com. However, at Disneyland in California, there has been at least one death on the monorail system, according to park historians.

Walt Disney World officials said they are working with law enforcement officials to find out what happened.

"Our heart goes out to the cast member and the family," Griffin said.

Epcot is scheduled to open on time at 9 a.m. today, but the monorail to the park will not be in service, according to a Walt Disney World spokeswoman.

Walt Disney World released the following statement from Griffin regarding the incident:

"Today, we mourn the loss of our fellow cast member. Our hearts go out to his family and to those who have lost a friend and co-worker. The safety of our guests and cast members is always our top priority. The monorail is out of service and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to determine what happened and the approximate next steps."

Check back for updates."

Another update:

"According to a former Walt Disney World monorail driver, the vehicles were outfitted with a safety system called Mapo. The former driver, who said he drove the current Mark VI monorail trains, said as soon as the monorail train gets within two checkpoints of another train, it automatically stops.

The former driver said he believes there are about 150 to 200 feet between checkpoints. He said drivers whose monorail train had to be shut down three times were removed permanently from their position.

In a video of Saturday's incident posted on ClickOrlando.com, several guests gathered on the platform as riders exited the monorail after the crash."

Based on what I have read, they already were suppose to have a warning system and possibly some type of auto break unless the driver overrode them.

The scary part to me is that one poster said they heard the system reopens tomorrow..... Seems to fast.

The re-opening was cleared by OSHA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
