I am considering running the WDW 1/2 marathon in January 2006. Can anyone how has run this event previously give me info on their exerience?

Also, wow fast does the registration close? Still considering this not sure if I am going to do this one or not.

I am completley new to running in events but have been a life long runner so I am interested in the event and think it would be cool to run at Disney.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Minnie,

My wife and I did the half marathon in January 2004...it was a great experience!

Last I looked they were still taking entries for the 2006 half marathon. In the past it has closed out by now though, maybe because they have now split the marathon and half onto different days it will be different.

They have also changed the course which disappoints me. We like running through parts of Epcot, over to the MK and through parts of the MK, then finishing in the MK parking lot. Starting in 2005 you will starts at Epcot, run to the MK, then back to Epcot. That leaves you very little opportunity to run through the parks.

If you have specific questions feel free to PM me!

Bob

Hi Minnie,

I did the 1/2 marathon this year and I'm also doing it again next year. I did John Bingham's training schedule. He has a booked called Marathon for Mortals that really was great. It has schedules for walking the 1/2 marathon, walking/running, running/walking and running it.

I believe the registration closed in August last year, but I'm not 100% sure.

I would like to invite you to visit the WISH board here at DIS. There are a bunch of us who post a weekly thread and its all about the Disney marathon and training.

Doing the 1/2 marathon this year was such an inspirational moment in my life and it really has changed me for the better. I also did another 1/2 marathon in April in Ocean City MD.

I hope to see you on the WISH board. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I did this two years ago and loved it, though, as Bob points out, they have changed the course. You used to run through Epcot before the sun rose--it was magical, and I never use that word. Music was on, all the lights on the buildings were lit and the 'big ball' from Illuminations was spinning in the middle of the lake. The course now goes through future world (I think) later in the race.

That said, it is easily the largest and one of the most well-organized races I've ever run in. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, even with the course change.

Get down there EARLY if you can so that you can go pick up your number and do the Expo the first day when it opens. At that point, you won't have to wait and there will be plenty of parking still.

I hope you decide to do it! It's great fun wandering around with your duck medal after the race! The year I did it, Push, the talking garbage can, stopped me in Tomorrowland to ask me all about it. Great fun!
