Hi!

I just found this board, and it's great to find so many other people that have the same goals as I do. I'm 20, and I've always been active, mostly in competitive dance. I stopped dancing this past year, and my dad and I started running together. We were going to run the disney half marathon together, but registration closed before we got a chance to sign up. :guilty:

So I've decided that I'm going to run/walk the full marathon, and my dad is going to cheer me on. I'm excited, but a little nervous at the same time. This will be my first marathon! Racing is new to me, but I just finished my first road race on the 4th. Crossing the finish line was so exciting, and I can't wait to race again! For all the more experienced runners out there, how scary was your first marathon? Did you train by yourself or with friends? I can't quite believe how looong a marathon will be! I guess its all about baby steps, right!

BelleMA,

Congratulations on signing up. It is very exciting to have such a lofty goal. There are many plans out there to get you ready for the full 26.2. Find one that sounds reasonable to you and stick with it. If you follow your plan you will be prepared to cover the distance and you'll have the confidence to do it since you will have run that far or nearly that far in your training.

I ran my first marathon 13 years ago. I did most of my training by myself with occasional long runs with a friend. I ran a spring marathon following one of the snowiest winters in MA. Most of my LRs were on an indoor track with 12 laps to a mile. Ugh. Thank goodness I had a walkman.

Lots of luck to you. You are right about baby steps. Go slowly to build your mileage and you'll get there.

Keep us posted on your progress on our weekly training thread.

BellaMa: Great that you are joining the marathon ranks. Remember that Disney marathon is an experience and not a race. Enjoy every minute of it.

You have plenty of time to build a nice base and your endurance through long runs. I can speak from experience of doing marathons(and formerly ultras) that taking it slow and easy will get you to the race. Increasing mileage to fast and not listening to your body will end up in injuries and you watching instead of running.

See you in Jan:)

It's VERY scary, but one step at a time. Don't look too far in advance and you can most cetainlydo it. DO you have a plan. Maarathoning fo rMortals by John "The Penguin" Bingham got my dh adn I though our first marathon in 2006. We had not been active for a long time and we were both 34. You can do this.

Please come join our weekly threads!!! You need to put in teh steps, but we can supply all teh support and encouragement you need!

Thanks for all the encouragement!

I'm reading Marathoning for Mortals now, and I finished Running for Mortals about a month ago. Right now I'm aiming at using the Run/Walk training program for the marathon. I'll have to start getting into the training thread. My dad usually coaches me(he was a long distance runner for years) but he's been traveling a lot for work recently, so I could definatly use some extra support!

Hello there. You are a dancer, huh. I can do a mean robot! If it makes you feel better, I ran my first race last June and completed Disney in Jan. I used a book taken from a class offered in Iowa. Not remembering the name is killing me. The non runners marathon trainer, perhaps. Something like that. Anyway, I married that with the Galloway method and had a very fun run and quick recovery. Good luck.

Here's a question for you guys regarding proof of time for corraling at WDW. Do they only want to see proof of time if you run 2:15 or less on a half marathon? I ran 2:21 so it is close...??

Unfortunately, close is not good enough. It has to be sub 2:15.

You still have time to get a qualifier:)

Hey, I will be 50 at the time and will be competing in and completing my first marathon. You can do it. Just follow on eof the many plans out there.
