Hi Everyone,

We're heading to WDW next month and unfortunately, my lactose intolerence is REALLY acting up due to being pregnant. Usually, I would just drink Lactaid milk and avoid anything too creamy or cheesy, but now, it seems even if I am eating cake or some other item that is made with milk I am in agony.

Add to that the fact that (pregnancy related) garlic and tomato sauce currently repluse me (even though I used to love them) and fresh veggies also do a number on my stomach, I feel like I am NOT going to have many options.

Anyone ever been in the same boat or have any suggestions? We are going to be down there for 9-10 days and for the most part, we can eat breakfast in our room.

Thanks!

Hello there. Can you take the lactaid pills? I am lactose intolerant as well and they work wonders, plus they are safe for pregnancy.

Oh....I remember propping up a big menu between me and DH because what he was eating (this really tomatoey looking piece of lasagne) was turning my stomach when I was pregnant the 1st time. I really feel for you!

For any sit down (TS) meals you should note on the ADR that you have an issue with dairy. You could just say you have a dairy allergy but if you do that they will prepare food for you that is 100% dairy free (as though you would have a serious reaction to dairy causing a 911 response). I do not know how they would handle a dairy intolerance. It sounds though you need to avoid dairy 100% right? Putting that on the ADR would do it - the chef will come out and talk to you and you can also call the restaurant beforehand (they'll give you the #). You can also note any other foods you wish to avoid.

You could also contact Brenda Bennet of MK foods (perhaps do a search for her phone # or email here) - she will send you a list of safe and some unsafe items for dairy that are served in the parks.

Hope you have a great trip!

Thank you both so much for the advice.

I planned on asking my doctor about the Lactaid tablets at my next visit- great to know they are considered safe for pregnancy. Even if I took them, I'd probably be took chicken to order anything w/ cheese, etc, but maybe they'd help with the situations where it is "surprise - there is milk in here" type situations. I'll definately try them in advance of the trip so I know if they are effective for me.

And thanks so much for the ADR/TS restaurant info - it really helps to know that in at least those situations I can avoid surprises! :-)

THanks again!!!

labst60, have a great trip. Once you try the lactaid tablets you'll be hooked! I'm assuming you've not used them before. They are wonderful. my hubby, myself and 2 of my 3 kids are lactose intolerant - hubby and I especially. It is the worst, and I love ice cream, cheese, etc. The tablets are so nice. 1 at the start of the meal and no gut cramps, etc! If things are really creamy or cheesy then 2 is needed and if I eat cheesecake well then a "few" are needed :)
Anyway, ask your dr. about them - you will come to appreciate having them in your purse!

My son has a severe milk allergy. We went to Disney this past fall and had absolutely no problem. Even at counter service. Everyone there is great and is very accomidating.

There is one person you need to contact ahead of time, and she will email you with counter service options that are dairy free. Her name is Brenda Bennett and she is with Magic Kingdom Foods. Here is her contact information.

I know the rotisserie chicken at the diner in future world is dairy free. And the turkey legs at MGM are dairy free as well.

They even have dairy free ice cream at the ice cream shop on main street in the Magic Kingdom and at Beaches and Cream at the Beach Club.

Also, the Dole Whips and Dole Whip Floats at Magic Kingdom - which are amazing - are lactose free. (They are not completely Dairy free because they contain sodium caesinate which can cause allergic reactions in people who are allergic to the caesin protein in milk - like my son)

I hope this helps

In addition to the excellent info from everyone else, note that all counter service restaurants are supposed to have books listing the foods' ingredients. If you walk into a table service place without an ADR, let them know about your issue and they'll send you a chef. We used ADRs twice, but I didn't really see the benefit, since they sent a chef over anyway, and in both cases they didn't seem to have the information already. In both cases, they were VERY accomodating.

Do contact the Disney food service folks--they have lists of OK foods for common allergens.

I just want to add that my son too has a severe dairy/egg allergy. He is 9 now and has been to disney 7 times, it will be 8 next month!!! They are great in handling food allergies, they put me right at ease, making a stress free vacation, which is why we need vacations right!:thumbsup2
