I wanted to sign up for the half marathon but enrollment is closed already! I'm wondering if they open the enrollment to more people later on after people cancel/drop out?

Anyone have experience with this? Full marathon is open but I will not be ready for that.

It will not open up again...sorry, but you can still get in by running for a charity.

Could I do the Goofy's race and a half marathon and just not show up for day 2 marathon?

Dreams Unlimited Travel is working on setting up a group with no fund raising requirement. Safetymom (Kathy) and Mouse Skywalker (Dave) are handling it. I'm sure there will be a post or thread once it is all set.

This is great news!!! Thank you for the info!!! I'll contact Safetymom and ask her to keep me posted!

If your vacation schedule allows, there's the Princess Half Marathon in March that's still open. Maybe you could try that one instead?

Thank you! I'm looking into that as well, but I think the parks will be crowded due to spring break? I want to combine it with my vacation.

I don't see why not, but it'd be a very expensive half marathon.

I'm just curious what your current level of training is... are you sure you won't be ready to give the full marathon a try?

Oh my gosh I am so out of shape now if you saw me you would probably seriously doubt I'd be able to do a 5k. But this will push me to get in shape and I plan to run 6x a week. I'm now considering the Tower of Terror 13k. I plan to run a 5k locally in Sept, then maybe do the 13k Oct 24.

Please forgive me for offering unsolicited advice, but if you're definitely out of shape, I'd recommend against 6x a week running. Even most advanced runners probably don't do that; you need the rest and recovery time too. Or perhaps mix in some cross-training or other activities on non-running days.

Be sure to let us know if you sign up for a 5K so we can cheer you on (virtually)!

Thank you! I would LOVE any advice you could give me. I am very out of shape -- have been in shape in the past, though. Used to run track in high school and did a 5k a few years back with a decent time. However, at this point I have about 70 lbs to lose and I know running has gotten me leaner before, so I am making the races my fitness goal.

What should be my plan for getting myself in shape to run 8 miles in October?

Thanks so much! :)

Are you doing any running now, or any other activities?

If you want to continue via PM, I'd love to chat with you further. (I should tell you however, that I'm by no means an expert... but about 9 months ago, I was in the same position you seem to be now...)

I just wanted to jump in here with a GRATS on getting back on track (pun intended!!!)

6 days of running is very challenging and possibly could be counter productive as it could lead to increased fatigue without the necessary recovery time and thus higher instance of injury. I do personally run 5 days a week with 1 being a long run over the weekend and my 6th day is my fun day of biking or aerobics class or swimming. Remember that those 70lbs didn't appear over night and unfortunately won't go away overnight and burn out will cause you to turn away from what could be a great new lifestyle.

In any case, good luck and hope you find a way to Jan's race

If you are looking for training advice and support, stop over to the Events side of WISH. There are many experienced people there that love to help newbies get started. We have a weekly thread as well as many smaller ones.

There is a getting started thread with suggestions for training books.

I recommend the book Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. Don't be daunted by the title. It is a book to guide from that first step forward. I use it as my basic guide and have found success. (I first started and was unable to get from one mailbox to the next.)

You have already gotten some wonderful advice here, but I would like to echo that running 6x/week is not a great idea. There are many, many seasoned runners who don't do that. It is awfully hard on the body, even when in great shape. I have run a couple of Halfs, a triathlon, and many shorter races (though now training for Goofy) and I wouldn't consider a 6x/week schedule.

If you are looking for a place to start, I strongly recommend the Couch to 5K program. Many here have used it successfully and it is a great way to get up to running a 5k SAFELY.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of running!
