WDW Generators for Power outage?

OK, in light of the "possible" hurricane (we leave Saturday at Noon from NY from JFK) we're wondering if we should pack flash lights and the like in case of power outage? Do the Disney Resorts have back up generators for electricity?

Last year, August 2003, we checked into the Contemporary the same day that Hurricane Charley did. It was somewhat chaotic. But, we never lost power, even though the eye went right over us. Disney does a fantastic job when it comes to something like this. We did pack a flashlight ourselves though, just in case. We also had some extra snacks with us and some bottled water. The food areas were crazy before the storm hit....masses of people trying to stock up on food in the food courts/gift shops. I was glad we had our own supply with us.

I believe Disney generates their own power. If I recall correctly, they have their own utility company, the Ready Creek Utility District. I would think they have underground utilities at Disney---I've never seen a power pole on property. That should make them very resistant to power outages.

While it is rare to have a power outage at WDW, it does happen. In my 10 years working as a CM I have had a few experiences in the resorts where the power has gone out for random reasons (never for storms)... they have back up generators for the front desk, Lobby, and other crucial areas, but these do not provide back up power to the guest rooms. If it would comfort you to have a flashlight it would not hurt to pack one, just in case.

I have seen backup generators at Disney resorts, which generators I suppose can keep lights on for a couple of days. The law only requires that emergency lights last long enough for anyone who wishes to leave the building to do so.

They say that Disney generates about 1/3 of its total power needs and buys the rest. In the wee hours on a not so hot night the need is less so the in house power covers more percentage wise.

Disney's power stations are connected to the high tension lines as opposed to local overhead lines. This means that loss of outside power due to falling trees is less compared with other utility customers. It would literally take a grid failure for Disney to lose public utility power. From the substations to the parks and resorts all the Disney power lines are underground.

I always pack a flashlight whenever I travel...you never know when it might be needed...yep! I was a girl scout and my momma was a girl scout leader...we're always prepared.

We stayed at AS movies about 2 years ago and the power went out for some reason. No storms, just lost power in what seemed like the whole resort for a couple of hours. It was so dark! My daughter was about 6 weeks old ( i know we are crazy for taking a baby that young) so she of course woke up right when the power went out crying for a bottle. That was fun - fixing a bottle in the dark in a hotel room I am not real familiar with!
