We have saved enough points to get a free week at WDW Doubletree Suites. We have been doing a little research and I wanted to know anyone's opinion on the location of Doubletree Suites (near Downtown Disney), the convenience of the shuttles to and from the parks and if we should rent a car or not?

In other words, will the location of Doubletree Suites be so far out of the way that the commute to the parks be lengthy? Would it be better to rent a car and drive to the parks each day?

Many thanks!:surfweb:

When we stayed at the DTD Doubletree Guest Suites, we used those days to go to Seaworld. We didn't use the hotel shuttle. We did use our own car. A car does make it a bit easier if the hotel shuttle doesn't go as frequently.

The DoubleTree Guest Suites is on Disney property and no further away from the parks than some of the Disney owned and operated hotels. The shuttle service is very good and typically runs every 30 minutes. You can definitely manage just fine without a car at this hotel, but if you're impatient a car will get you back and forth faster than the buses.

What you might consider doing is walking over to SSR and catching a bus to the parks that way. We were not able to get a DVC room one time, and I ended up paying blood money to the wonderfull Hilton family for the weekend. That being said, they did give us a very nice business suite, which made staying off property a little more bearable.

We would just walk over to SSR and catch the buses to the park. The walk is probably less than a mile.

We have stayed here the last 2 Easter breaks. Location is good as there are many restaurants right around the corner and close to downtown disney (granted we always had a car) and the commute to the parks is not that far (5-10 minutes). We never used the bus system since we like to control as much of our schedule as we can, but have heard both good (on time schedule) and bad (stops at other 2/3 or other hotels so can be crowded).

Just a word of caution for your planning - the restaurant service here is slow and the food is "just OK" on their best days.

You will be happy with DoubleTree Downtown Disney. The shuttle service to the parks is very good, very comfortable and very reliable. As far as a car goes, we always have a car. It saves soooo much time in the long run. Even when staying at a Disney hotel. If you want to travel anywhere other than a theme park, a car will get you there a lot faster. Traveling to a Disney resort for dinner? faster. Going to Boardwalk for some shopping? Faster. Going golfing? faster.
