Here are some capsule reviews of our dining experiences during our recent trip.
New TS Discoveries
Tony's Town Square. We had a really nice meal here. No, it wasn't gourmet, but the setting is nice, the service was good, and the food was better than we expected. DW had the shrimp scampi, I had the chicken parmesan, and we both asked for extra garlic. We got it! Whoo-ee! Lots o' garlic, but not so much as to kill the flavor of the dishes. Just right! And the portions were ample. We'll be returning here for sure.
Tutto Italia. My parents were along for this trip, and we all four ate here. Everyone really enjoyed it! The food was well-prepared, and the wait staff attentive. We'll get back here some day, but with so many Epcot area eateries, who knows when?
Kona Cafe. DW really enjoyed the shrimp and scallops, while I thought the prime rib was pedestrian. The atmosphere was noisy, which I hadn't expected. Still, the service was good.
Restaurant Marrakesh. What a great find! We'd made an ADR for our '07 trip sort of on a lark, then cancelled it when we decided to add an extra MVMCP night instead. At the time, we decided we would definitely try this restaurant during our '08 trip. But neither of us really wanted to. It's not exactly in our comfort zone, and neither of us was looking forward to it. But now that we've tried it, we wish we'd gone every time we've been at WDW! The food was great -- especially the very, very savory harira soup! DW had the beef couscous, while I had couscous royale. Now, I'm not a big fan of lamb, but I did enjoy that dish. I look forward to exploring the menu further next time. Oh, and the service was superb!
Old TS standbys that did a wonderful job once again: Narcoossee's, Brown Derby, 50s Prime Time, Tusker House, Rose & Crown, Crystal Palace, Liberty Tree Tavern. Good food, good service.
New CS Discoveries
Toy Story Pizza Planet. Wow, this exceeded our expectations! Okay, we had low expectations going in, but the pizza was actually good. No, it's not our favorite hometown pizza, but we know not to expect that when we travel. As pizza, it did the job -- the sauce, bread, cheese, and toppings didn't compete, but complemented each other. And each had a decent taste on its own -- they were not trying to cover up poor-quality ingredients with some other component. Plus we liked the outdoor seating area. So we'll be back next time!
Flame Tree BBQ. We had the ribs here, and if you like St. Louis style ribs, they're good. We're not fans of St. Louis style ribs, so we didn't thoroughly enjoy them. But there was nothing wrong with them -- plenty of tender meat, not much fat. It's just not our style. Next time, we'll try something else from the menu.
Backlot Express. We had burgers here, and they were just OK. We might try the turkey sandwich some day, though.
Old CS standbys that did a wonderful job once again: Sunshine Seasons, Roaring Fork.
One that didn't: We were disappointed that for the first time ABC Commissary gave us food that had obviously been sitting around too long; our Cuban sandwiches were soggy. We should have complained, but we were in too much of a hurry at the time.
