WDW and Universal. Who wins?

My stance is actually not that Disnye is somehow betteer, but that it is in fact THE SAME. None of this is universal truth. You talke like there are zero strollers at Universal and nobody would dare ram one into you there. I Guarantee you that it happens. Rudes guests are at Universal. They area slo at Disney. The VAST MAJORITY at BOTH are perfectly nice and polite. It is simply what one sees. Anecdotal stories are not proof of anything other than something that happened one time.

What makes someone ruder at Universal? Nothing! But, in my experience I have see more swearing, line jumping, rowdy kids/teens, drunkenness, loud complaining, etc. But my point is that it isn't really a truism that guests are ruder at one or the other - it's just one's perception of it.
100% Agree with all of this. And happy to report we only encountered 1 rude person at DLR this past weekend.

A mother pushing her child to the front of the fireworks while ramming into everyone around her. The poor girl was so embarrassed and kept telling her to stop.

DL guests are usually a pleasant bunch, if a bit hardcore. Sometimes they act like they own the place though. They are always happy to share their tips & tricks with you!

So then why say
I think Uni guests are ruder to each other
if really it's nothing?

It makes it sound like after several back and forths your perception (no sarcasm intended here) is that Universal is more adult atmosphere and thus with that comes xyz. It's certainly the impression I got because I was giving you many examples of what I saw but none were mentioned in your comments. It's also why I mentioned the language and the behaviors I saw as something that goes far and above from language. No one would really like to hear colorful language but *most* people would rather hear that than see parents slapping their kids, yelling and screaming at them and then getting into fist fights with other guests (although sometimes it's their own parties).

Indeed what most people have been discussing over the years is that for as "family friendly" as Disney is the behaviors they see are anything but that.

I don't care if someone says a curse word in the grand scheme of it, I do care if they are belittling their own child because it's hot out, the child doesn't want to do a ride, the parent threatens to send them home (was a recent thread too heavy with a comparison to another sibling that could stand the heat better), the "I paid this much you're going to like it" and all sorts more. Really in the context of conversation it's amazing what you mentioned, surely one can be more :sad2: at the things mentioned than a rowdy teen. I'd take a rowdy teen over the dejected face of a child who clearly felt guilt at having been in the parks with his dad but all the lines were long. I guess you're right, all down to perceptions. No worries I think we've fleshed out each other's viewpoints on the matter :) :)

I didn't really see rude stuff over at DL. I think the locals aspect is most of it. What I did tend to see at DL was more because of that locals forgetting that tourists also come so there was a bit less signage compared to WDW that I saw. When the majority of your clientele lives within driving distance the parks tend to take on a different atmosphere. Then again could it have killed DCA to have just a few less IPAs during their food and wine festival :rotfl2: ***I kid because it's CA/west coast that's just their thing

My issue with the Disney crowd vs universal is that at universal, aside from some HP gear, people just wear normal clothes. Nothing like at Disney, where you see ears, coordinated outfits, etc. I actually see a good deal if Disney gear at universal.

I also kind of hate the sight lines at universal. Why am I walking into islands of adventure and seeing Hogwarts? It comes across as so slapdash.

I agree with this too. I found Disneyland folks to be quite chill and less rude than WDW guests overall but there is definitely a sense that some locals believe they "own" the park. There's a reason they're called "pass-holes" out there (not a term I made up. Have heard west coasters use it).

With all the comments on beer this past weeks I was honestly expecting to see drunk ppl after noon. Not a single one. :rotfl:

You certainly project a lot and read into a lot of what I have said. I said "I THINK." That's I - As in me. It is my personal experience, and my entire point from the very begining is that it is in fact anecdotal and not a truism. It's hard for people to realize that sometimes because we are so ingrained in our positions - myself included. I was simply profering a theory as to why people, particularly those in intense fandoms, often feel that way.

There is some good that does come from the sight lines. If they had Disney level sight lines there wouldn't be a Velocicoaster or an Incredible Hulk coaster.

And Disney isn't even caring as much about sightlines. Anyone remember the moaning about the Skyliner and how it would destroy the sightlines? Cuz I do. Not to mention the barges in Epcot.

I actually think people are starting to get annoyed at the ears because they are so common now they are also in a lot of people's way especially during rides or sit down shows in a theater (where you'd think being polite would mean you remove them but alas nope) and during nighttime shows and that one is on Disney as well though for creating interactive ears but I don't think the person who's view is now ears when wanting to watch a show is thinking "gee I'm so glad people are doing a theme here".

In addition Disney is putting Tiana in Frontierland which is not the same theme at all. Granted Tiana is on Liberty Belle but that's it. Now you're going to have a Tiana theme mixed in with a western theme. That was heavily talked about with the announcement of the ride. I'm sure they will do well on the theming but it's not as if Disney isn't making some of these choices you're having an issue with over at Universal. I can understand where you're coming from but Disney doesn't seem to be minding quite as much. Also how does Moana walk through fit in with Spaceship Earth? I mean I get it they are having World Nature so they think it fits with Living with the Land and all that but yeah. I'm walking through a Polynesian themed area next to space and futuristic styling.

Also at Disney even they want you to walk that fine line between Disneybounding (which is loosely okay'd by Disney) and full on imitation which is a no no at Disney.

I’ve never had a problem seeing a show because of people wearing ears. And I’m short (5’3”).

They could’ve done something to prevent people from seeing Hogwarts from the front of the park.

That's great. I like the variety they have now with the ears and they aren't my thing but they have some really cute styles but when you're sitting down in a theater and now your view is of the ears or you're on a boat for a ride and you've got the ears in your way...it's something I'm seeing more mentioned as the ears have become very popular. They didn't used to be as ubiquitous in the parks as they are now and people have generally forgotten spatial awareness with that. You won't see a CM tell you to remove it unless it's on a ride or attraction that would present a safety risk, but it is up to others to be courteous of other people.

It's less to do with height and more to do with something added to obstruct your view.

One blog I see from 2022 puts it a nice way although the topic was relieving head pressure and had the gentle advice of: "Fact: inside a darkened theater, no one can see that your hair is a mess without the Minnie Mouse ears on. No one probably cares what your hair looks like outside the theater either as they’re all focused on having a magical day and/or keeping their unruly children from pantsing them while on line for it’s a small world. The folks sitting directly behind you in the theater will be SOOOO thankful that you’ve removed your ears, since they obstruct the view of at least 1-2 rows behind you. This happened to me while watching the Festival Of The Lion King show at Animal Kingdom. When the woman sitting directly in front turned around and saw I had my toddler in my lap, she immediately removed her Minnie Mouse ears. I was so happy I thanked her right then, and again after the show was over, for her thoughtful sprinkling of pixie dust."

In general your most leeway will be given to firework shows but parades and other shows as well as certain rides it can negatively impact other guests. So yeah it's great to see them around if you're thinking about theming on the other hand we kinda gotta be thinking of others too :)

Ugh! Those barges! I'm not one to obsess about theme park sightlines, but those hulking assaults on aesthetics really got my goat. It was like Disney gave up caring about the details that have always made it special.

I was prepared for them, had heard all the gripes about them and went in thinking "ok I'm not really going to care about this"....until I got to Epcot and saw it in person and had to change my mind despite the fact that normally not a big deal to me with respects to sightlines.

When you're using the Friendship Boats to get across World Showcase they were just right there. The view across World Showcase Lagoon was so neat to see all the buildings from both sides (meaning looking towards American Adventure and Port of Entry) and those barges were such a huge disruption to it. At least with IllumiNations they brought it in and out as needed instead of having this big round disc and huge curved things just sitting there all day long.

You knew those barges were bad when I even saw average parkgoers (as in people not on forums like this) complaining about them.

We’re at Universal now and the experience, outside of excellent HP theming, is horrible. It’s like a souped up Six Flags. Our hotel looks like any random Hilton, despite being a deluxe resort. Nothing like our DVC 1 bedrooms. The employees here have mostly been nice, but some have been extremely rude.

I just don’t see a world where this experience is anything close to what Disney offers.

Oh and I had to pay $2 for a locker for Hagrid’s. Talk about nickel and diming. Disney doesn’t charge for Tron lockers.

Agree on some of this. But like you, we spend time there and WDW which is why I say "we" win.

RPR is a bit of a stretch as a Deluxe agreed, and comparing our 1BR DVC is futile. Hard Rock and R Pacific qualify IMO, and City Walk offers a lot. They should create their own DVC, we would buy day 1, esp with EU opening soon.

But I really like express pass that you have, but haven't mentioned? That eliminates so much planning and esp sweat this time of year.

We still like Spiderman and Hulk in IOA as well as the ones you mentioned. Kong is very cool but not that great of a do over.

Jurassic Park attraction and the other 2 water rides are always on our summer list.
Then US has a lot as well.

The immersion of the HP world's and the H Express are really amazing. And I think EU will have some great lands as well as they have stepped up their game, and probably hired some of the best Disney Imagineers and CM's as well.

Oh and why is there no way to skip the line for Hagrid’s?! We’re paying for their deluxe hotel and can’t even skip the line for their most popular ride.

Since your hotel allows you to enter the parks an hour early, we usually go then. I think it's just so popular they must have decided to exclude it.

That PP may not be familiar with how Universal does their skip the line in this respects.

Universal does NOT put Express Pass on their newest rides.

I usually give this example that Forbidden Journey didn't have it for nearly 7 years, and it only got it when in summer of 2017 Universal randomly added it to all their existing Harry Potter attractions at once, let that part kinda sink in that from 2010 to 2017 EP did not include FJ. It's a system that works well for Universal but if you're more into Disney people get so used to Disney adding a skip the line to EVERYTHING even when something doesn't need it expect that other parks will simply be like this as well.

Universal generally waits until the wait times are lower (whatever amount they feel is appropriate) and then they add EP because EP will generally raise the wait time for Standby. We all expected VelociCoaster to get it before Hagrid's as the wait times were steadily lower and lower. VelociCoaster now has EP although it's not know if this was a temporary or permanent part. Generally Universal just waits it out.

To give another example since I mentioned Silver Dollar City before while their Trailblazer pass does include their newest in demand ride they put a limitation on it for once through even if you purchased the Unlimited Pass. Time Traveler was the ride that did this until Mystic River Falls opened up, now Time Traveler is no longer restricted but Mystic River Falls is and they punch a hole in your Trailblazer pass as you go through.
