Here's the story....

I've been offered a new position with a large corporation. It is a salaried position where I've been offered 3wks vacation to start :thumbsup2

My question is this. We have a family vacation scheduled to WDW in July.

I'm calling today to accept the position. Do I mention the vacation time they offered as part of the package and mention the WDW vacation or do I wait until closer to July and ask for the time off then

Trying to get off on the right foot in this new job ;)

Tell them right away when you accept the position. That way they know well in advance and that it was a pre-planned trip.

If you wait till later they may say "sorry you can't have off at that time" but generally if you let them know when you are hired that you have a trip all planned that they will give you off.

You call them to accept and at that time tell them you have a preplanned vacation for July and you hope that won't be a problem. This is called a condition of hire and I would say 99% of the time there is no issue.

I would let them know about the WDW vacaton up now. You don't want to surprise them come July. Most companies do not have a problem when this situation comes up but if you waited and told them later, they may not appreciate it. Congrats on the new job.

I agree with everyone else. One condition of taking it might be that it will be an unpaid week though, keep that in mind.

Congrats on your new job! Like everybody else, I would suggest mentioning it when you call. Just kind of as a "one more thing" kind of deal. That way, everyody is aware and they'll know that you've been planning your trip since before you got the job.

DD is starting a new job on the 19th. ( giving old job a notice) Our trip is the 24th of March. She told them right away and they were more then understanding. She explained that I had booked the trip in January of 2006. Of course she doesn't get it paid. She will be losing a weeks pay.

I agree, tell them up front. It's actually a good test to see what kind of company they are. If they make all kind of noise about it and seem really put-out or upset about it, it's a good warning bell that this might not be such a great company to work for. If they take it in stride, it's a sign they could be a decent company that tries to work with their employees whenever possible.

Good luck! And congrats on both the job and the Disney trip! :)

Yep, tell them up front. I've always done this, and it helps. I actually went a bit further and typed it up in a letter and gave them a copy of it so it was on file if there was ever a problem.

I would mention it now they are more likely to say yes since it is preplanned well in advance. If you wait they could say no because they might be really strict about vacation time and not let you use it for six months or might not let you use it until you officially accrue it. Mentioning it when you accept the offer is something they probably get quite a bit.

ITA.

I agree with everyone else. Tell them upfront and have it in writing. Good luck.

Thank you everyone :goodvibes

I will be calling shortly to take care of this. The vacation time is part of the package so I don't have to worry about accrual so it is just asking for the time off that is the issue.

I will give it a try and see what they say.

Thanks!

You tell them at the time you accept the position. If you do it in person. you have it for them in writing as well, that way they can place it in your personel file, and they can't come back at you in July when it's time for you to leave and tell you "We didn't know" .

Congratulations!
