Pre trippie report

Once upon a time there lived a beautiful princess…..well, maybe that’s from a different story. ;)

Anyway, once upon a time there lived a nearing 40 mommy who enjoyed acting like a little kid on her summer vacations…

Let’s set the stage (shall we?). :thumbsup2 We had planned (well actually we hadn’t planned it, it had been planned FOR us) an absolutely insane couple of weekends in May 2007. My baby (38) brother was finally getting married, and my husband, daughter and I were all included in the wedding party. This was not as great as it sounds. Don’t get me wrong – I was thrilled, delighted even, that baby bro was finding happiness. That part was awesome.

Not so great issue #1 – they were getting married on a Saturday in Mexico. Now you may have noted that we live in Baltimore – very much the opposite side of the country. And that the school year would not be over yet by that date. This would all have been overcome, we would’ve sucked it up and just taken DD out of school for a few days in order to enjoy the time.

Except for problem #2 – the following weekend (Thursday-Sunday) we would be with DD’s girl scout troop on a trip to Savannah, Georgia. The Mecca of Girl Scouts, in case you were wondering. And the troop had been planning this trip for YEARS, saving their cookie money, in anticipation of bridging (ceremony to move up to the next level of scouting) at the Juliet Lowe House in Savannah. So DD would have been absolutely crushed to miss this trip, which she had earned the money for herself.

Thus the dilemma. :scared1:

And the unfortunate gameplan:

Part 1
On Friday morning, fly out of BWI to San Diego (at the lovely 6:30 am hour). My parents will pick us up at the airport and we’ll drive down to Mexico together. Luckily we’re staying at the hotel where the wedding will take place. Rehearsal dinner Friday night, wedding Saturday afternoon, back to the airport on Sunday to fly home. (6 hour flight each way, joy of joys)

Part 2
The next Thursday afternoon, get kids out of school a bit early, catch a flight out of BWI to Charlotte, connection to Savannah, shuttle to hotel. Bridging ceremony on Friday, free day of sightseeing in Saturday, back to the airport Sunday to fly home.

I was a bit woozy just thinking about it. But as all you parents out there know, that’s the way it goes sometimes.

However, in the course of planning all this May travel, I made a decision. We would be sick to death of flying after all this was said and done, and so….any vacation we took during the summer was going to be a ROADTRIP! Final, amen, so be it. I think.

Since we (I mean, “I”) :goodvibes had made the momentous decision that our summer vacation was going to be somewhere we could drive to, we started looking at our options.

We are fortunate to live in the suburbs of Baltimore – very centrally located in the MidAtlantic region of the country and there are lots of places we could go. New York City, Niagara Falls, New England, Philly, Amish Country, the beach, etc etc etc.

But let’s be real for a moment --- if I’m posting the report here, we already know where we decided to go. One of my very favorite places – Walt Disney World. We have been to Disney about 6 times now (including two times last summer, thanks to a last minute decision to try the free dining in August). We’re mostly an offsite crowd, because competition for your business in Orlando is pretty fierce, and you can generally find amazing places to stay at reasonable rates. But as I mentioned before, we went last August with the free dining, and stayed onsite for the first time (although we did stay 2 nights at Wilderness Lodge one year, we had never stayed the full vacation with Disney before). We were frugal-minded so stayed at the All Star Sports. We had a complete blast with the Dining Plan, and the All Star wasn’t bad. It wasn’t as nice as most other Orlando hotels we’ve visited, but I don’t think it’s supposed to be, that’s not the intention. The idea is that even the budget minded can stay onsite at Disney, and it fulfills that purpose just fine, in my opinion.

Anyway, we started thinking about the idea of driving to Orlando from Baltimore. I mapquested it, and it was about 900 miles, or 14ish hours. We could do it if we made a stop midway, so I started planning it out.

If we left on Friday (my hubby said we needed to leave very early to avoid DC traffic, like 4 am ish), we could go about 9 hours and stay somewhere in South Carolina. Then drive the remaining 5 hours on Saturday, check into our hotel and then head to the parks.

We were quite bummed out that the dates for the free dining did not work out for us this year, as they start the same week that our school year begins. We would be going the week prior to that, so if we wanted the dining plan, we would have to pay for it. Okay, let’s get on the Disney website and cost it out, see what we’re talking here. All right, with a stay at a budget resort, cost is about $2K for the week, including dining plan and park hoppers. Then hubster says, “Hey, put in the Port Orleans just for fun and see how much extra it would be” (isn’t he a good guy? A saint, really). :cloud9: Okay, it’s an extra $400 for the week – what do we think? Well, we don’t really need it, but hub decides he’d be happier at Port Orleans. So, alas (hee hee hee) I had to give in to his wishes – noting the importance of compromise in a marriage. :thumbsup2 And we really are justified to upgrade – since we’ll be driving, we won’t have to pay for plane tickets or rental car, so it’s really kind of a wash. Yeah, okay.

Up Next – A major change in plans.

Yup! I found your pre-trippie and can't wait to hear more!!!

I know you're now staying at Port Orleans, but which one?? French Quarter?? Riverside?? I am staying at Riverside in Nov. (What a good wife you are compramising on moving the hotel for hubby! ;) )

So, what's next???:confused3

Thank you so much for coming by -- let me introduce you to the crickets! :goodvibes

Next installment coming up....

A major change in plans…..so fast forward to May, where we somewhat successfully made it through our 2 very busy weekends.

Survived Mexico, give or take a small run-in with the Tijuana police – trust me, you don’t want to know! But in case you were wondering, the fleecing of tourists is definitely alive and well. :scared1:

Survived Savannah with the Girl Scouts. Really a lovely city, by the way. We had a good time there and the girls had a blast. Had dinner at Paula Deen’s restaurant too (The Lady and Sons – yum!) :cloud9:

So now we were home. And ready to start planning some more for this trip. I started looking up EMH’s (extra magic hours) for the days we would be there – not so we could go, but so we could avoid them. Our last trip, it seemed like 50 bazillion people attended those things (both mornings and evenings) and we did better by just getting to the parks early and using fast pass. :snooty:

Then (just for fun, ‘cuz I’m crazy that way :hippie: ) I went out on the Southwest website. Guess what? I could get airfare for $69 each way. I started polling the troops. Actually, I said “you know, guys, I was looking at airfares and …..”, and they all in unison screamed “oh god, please let’s fly!!!!!”. Hmmph….in truth, I had kinda been looking forward to the roadtrip. But we decided, maybe next summer, we’ll road trip it north instead of south, and visit New York City, Cooperstown and around there. Probably more to see anyway. I hear I-95 south to Florida ain’t too exciting (except for Pablo). So I found myself putting out more green stuff for airfare and then also making rental car reservations – got a fairly good deal through Mousesavers with Budget Rental Car (I just can’t wait for buses at Disney – it’s a sickness).

Okay, so this vacation is getting a lot more expensive than I had planned. And now, I have our Disney package for Sat 8/18-Fri 8/24, and I need to find somewhere for us to stay on 8/17 (we’ll be arriving a day earlier than originally planned since we’re not driving) and I also need to find us somewhere for 2 extra nights at the end.

Okalee dokalee……..artalee chokalee...........

Well, we have one day left on some Universal passes that we bought a couple of years ago. Unlike many disers out here, we really like Universal – like it in Calfornia, like it in Florida. Both times we have gone to Universal Orlando, we have stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel – using your hotel id to go through the Express Pass line (sorta like the fast pass line) is one of the best perks EVER!!! It basically means you don’t have to wait in line and you can go on any ride you want, whenever it strikes your fancy. Cool, yes? YES.

However…..the Hard Rock Hotel for Fri 8/17 is running $259/night. Yikers. Let’s try the Royal Pacific Hotel, which is also onsite at Universal but a little bit cheaper – Expedia and everyone else has it for $239/night. We call the hotel directly, ask for the AAA rate, and get it for $191. Score!!! This is why you should always ask. Very good. :yay:

So, then for the last two nights, I did all kinds of research. I went online everywhere. I tried priceline about 4 times, but they never had anything available. (last time, I got the Hilton at DTD for $75 – first time ever using priceline, and I’m spoiled now). Now, it wasn’t liking any of my bids, so too bad. Then whammo, Expedia was showing Disney Value resorts for $69 – okay, sold at Pop Century for two nights. A full on Disney vacation for us this time. :dance3:

Cool………………..beanies……………….. :cheer2:

It sounds like a very busy week, and it probably will be, but not as bad as it looks. Plenty of days are “go here until we feel like leaving” kinda days. So hopefully there will still be plenty of time for swimming, napping, genial beverages at the pool, etc.

I can’t believe it’s now only 2 weeks away!!!

Coming up – pictures of our matching lime green shirts (disers seeking disers).

Sounds great!!! :thumbsup2

You will be busy, but that's how it's suppose to be! I just realized you will be in Disney when my DD is getting married! So, 7pm on the 18th, think of me, in Connecticut at my daughters wedding! :bride:

Hi!!! Just found your TR thanks to the link I saw when you posted in mine..we went almost that exact week last year...give or take some days. It was great..not crowded at all!!! :thumbsup2

I will definitely be thinking of you guys (okay, we need to raise a toast to DisneyObsession at 7 pm on the 18th.....check!) -- a wedding! Very exciting!!! :yay: I bet you are all going nuts planning, with only two weeks to go.....

Well, since we went last year at about this same week....how much you wanna bet we were there at the same time??? :flower3: We like to take our vacations the week before school starts. We got free dining last year, which was pretty nifty. As I say, I think this will be the last time for a little while.

It's amazing to think you just got married and went to WDW on your honeymoon.....my husband is now telling me that maybe we can go to WDW to celebrate our 20th anniversary (that would be 4 years from now). Time flies.....especially since inside, I'm still about 10 years old.

gossssh c_nt type, but I',m here!! :thumbsup2

I can’t call this part 4 ‘cuz I said I would have a picture up of our stunning (NOT) :lmao: lime green shirts, and I don’t quite yet. But I will soon, I promise…

But I’m doing a little mini part, because I am so excited!

Background….one thing you have to know about me is that in real life, I’m a pretty frugal person. I bring my lunch to work, we put money away for retirement, think about whether we really need something before we buy it….pretty boring, yes? Yeah, I know. But it’s all in the attitude…..no matter what we’re doing, my family is usually having a pretty good time doing it, even if it doesn’t cost a lot.

The point being that every year for my birthday in June, my parents send me about $100, with instructions to buy something fun. Same thing for my husband’s birthday in August. So we were sitting around this weekend, eyeballing this money, when it occurs to us something we could do fun (and frivolous) with it – LA NOUBA!!! Oh, yeah, baby (said in my best Austin Powers imitation)! So we went online and DID IT!!!!!!!!!1 Woo hooty! :woohoo:

So we will be seeing the 6 pm show on Friday 8/24.

I’m getting extra super excited for this vacation now….it was an incredibly stressful and pain in the buttock kinda day at work. I need some fun now!

Coming up – those shirts, I swear.

OK, I'm in!!

Looking forward to reading more of your report. Sounds pretty good so far!

Seriously, my daughter is so proud of her shirt. :woohoo: The ones made by her (cough cough) very creative parents aren't quite as good. :upsidedow

But we should be memorable. Dear hubby says I will owe him big-time after this!! ("But dear, don't you want people to see us eating dole whips and riding Space Mountain and watching Nemo....and they'll know we are really really smart because we dis?") Eh, probably not -----but it'll still be fun!

Have a great evening everybody. :flower3:
