Gaylean's week in review or maybe two weeks


Brooke started first grade. She loves it and her teacher loves her (of course ). I went to Back-to-School night last night and the teacher informs me that she falls asleep everyday in class . Now I know first grade is hard and I also know she is as cute as pie but I'm telling you right now if Ethan would have done that the teacher would not have been so nice. Why do teachers and people in general treat her so good? Believe me she's not an angel. I had the same thing happen last year. She got all Outstandings on her report card yet her scores in reading were lower than Ethan's were in kindergarten and he got all Satisfactories . He could read a Dr. Suess book by the time he left kindergarten and she still needs pictures, which the teachers say is normal but why would he get an S and her an O

The teacher also tells us she is pregnant and she will leave in January only to return before the end of the year. I know teachers are people too and they get pregnant but why would she come back after the kids have already gotten use to another teacher She's due in February so if she only takes ten weeks off she'll barely be back before the end of the year.

Wait I'm not done.

My fingerprinting hasn't come in yet. I went on Friday. They said it would take 2 hours to get the results. I've been calling them all week. They told me that there was something wrong with the billing and kept having me call the HR department at the school district. When I would call them they would say that the BIL number was right and then I would have to call fingerprinting agency back and I would get someone else who didn't know a thing I'm surprised I still have a job. The fingerprinting agency called today and told me to come in again because they lost it This is not a short process. You have to wait in the waiting room forever to get in.


Wait there's more.


I'm not sure if you all know this but right after the cruise our phone and TV were out for awhile. When I was trying to get it fixed they assured me that the bill would reflect this. I got a bill yesterday that was higher than normal. So I call and talk to a lady that tells me not to hang up because it is really busy and she has to contact the tech department. I was on hold for 2 hours. I finally hung up and called back because I had to go to Back-to-School night. I get this lady that is a real winner. She actually gets back to me quickly but when she does she tells me I'm getting refunded only for 10 days and only for the phone and not the TV I said that couldn't be right and she said it is. I said I needed to speak to someone higher than her and she said who. I said someone that was going to help me. She said I'm going to refund you for ten days. I said no, you will get me a supervisor. She says no, I'm going to refund you WTH is that? Finally she agreed to get me a supervisor. I guess she thought being mean and giving me the same info over and over was going to make me happy I sat on hold for 30 minutes waiting for that supervisor until I had to hang up. I guess I'll have to call back today

Wait....

My back is hurting really bad through all of this.

And the weird news:

Before they even called me back for my fingerprinting they asked if I wanted a higher job They want me to be an aide in special day class
It is for 6 hours a day at my kids school and the pay is a lot more. I'm not sure I can handle it so I'm not sure what is going to happen yet but it is strange.

I think that's it but I'll think about it and let you know.

Would the aide for special class be extra to what you were going to be doing or instead of?

It's going to be hard to go on the Med by yourself and I would laugh at you to if you wanted me to go to Alaska By the way, men are hopeless. Sorry guys.

Missed this earlier.

I had noticed one or two comments about this. We didn't have too much trouble on our cruise. We did have some door knocking and running away(but that could have been Nan and Gaylean ) and some moving of door decorations, but nothing bad. I guess there were more kids/teens on this cruise. Whenever I saw teens they were well behaved and polite.

All the bad teens were in Rockin bar D and I don't think I ever saw you in there I only knocked once how many times did it happen

I think instead of but I'm not sure. It's nice to be wanted but it is strange considering everyone is losing their jobs and unemployed right now. We had a huge enrollment this year because a lot of families moved in with other families. That's why I'm scared not to take the job even though I'm not sure I would be good with those kids. Plus the pay is a lot better because they are special needs kids.

They range from high functioning autism to sever autism to Down's Syndrome to slight learning disabilities. Some of them are main streamed into Ethan's class so there may be a 5th or 6th grader that can do 3rd grade work so they're just a little slow. Other's need full attention and help.

Actually mom and I were talking about it yesterday in the airport... if we do the family cruise in August would it seem nuts to turn around and do the Tortolla cruise just a couple of weeks later - which it took all of about 5 seconds to say... um.... NAH!!!! I'll just come home... do the wash and repack it all...

I just have to have this one project done and hopefully within a week or so I may get the next date on everything then I will book away!!! (almost as much as you book things, but well... can't have that much competition, can we????)

Everybody please wish Tyler good luck today having a better day than yesterday. It didn't go so well for him. He was quite physical with other kids. And he just can't remember to raise his hand in class instead of just yelling out. But that second part isn't really anything to worry about, that will just take getting used to. The physical part, however, is what we've always had to deal with in group situations. Good grief!

His dad was making excuses and told me he's not surprised he had a rough first day. I told him that's no excuse, he was excited to see his friends and told me he really enjoyed school, so he should have had the same good day all the other kids had. It's just dad's denial poking out again.

Then he countered with, "Maybe we should have the doctor put him on something to improve focus." Well, that has nothing to do with what was happening and he actually has good focus when doing schoolwork. Some men are clueless.

First grade is hard. Just ask Brooke, she's sleeping again and has been for an hour and today was a half day

Yes, we sure explained to Abi numerous times about the characters but to no avail. She did manage to approach a Princess and Minnie Mouse and felt quite proud I think.

In the most recent issue of People magazine, there's a story on fears/phobias one of them is about a child afraid of people in costumes--I just read it last night. (page 126 in the Sept. 8 issue) She was treated at the Child Phobia Project at Virginia Tech and overcame her fear. Interesting story.

And it was lovely disboards people to share with too.

Holly, you've already gotten lots of feedback on this, but I want to add my 2 cents. Speaking as a former first grade teacher (15 years), the first few days of school, going from Kind. to first grade, is a very big adjustment. Lots of kids go through a rough patch. It's understandable that for you and with Tyler's history you'd be concerned. Tyler is facing what all the other kids are facing and he has the additional challenge of his disabilities added to that. Hopefully things will smooth out soon. If not, it will be different than last year because now he's been identified and he'll get the help he needs. Bless you, you've had your hands full for so long. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to parent a special needs child, but I've observed many, many parents doing it. Remember that you're not alone in this now, you have the school and Tyler's doctor with you, and even his dad, it sounds like he's trying. My experience has been that dads often have a harder time accepting their kids' difficulties, even under the best of circumstances. Hang in there!
