Which wave pool is better for a 5 yr. old? I've heard that TL's has rougher waves than BB. TIA!

I would say Blizzard Beach. My sister got knocked down at TL and we were in the shallow part. It dragged her across the bottom and scratched up her back bad enough to have to go to first aid. She was 24 at the time.

Typhoon Lagoon's wave pool puts out a Huge Wave every few minutes.

I went there with my son when he was 5. We had a good time, but I had to hold him when the wave hit, it would knock us over a bit and then he would splash in the now choppy water until we heard the boom for the next wave. He would then run back to me to be picked up again. We stood in a shallow section so the wave was only like waist height when it hit.

Blizzard Beach's wave pool is more like the ones at the local water parks. Its much calmer. :) But it has less shade.

Typhoon Lagoon has more trees. They have a new slide, that we are going to check out next week, but I think its for older kids. My son is 12 now, but he still loves Typhoon Lagoon.

Definitely Blizzard Beach is the water park I would head for. When my son was 5 he hurt his toe at TL wave pool, it is just far to rough. We all prefer BB.

Blizzards wave pool is definately calmer! The one at Typhoon can easily knock you off your feet and if you get pulled along by it the grazes from the bottom are awful!

That said my boys 10 and 8 love it!

Ho ma Gawd....
I am sitting here in disbelief!
Seems like everyone is saying TL is rougher than BB!
I am worried now! We have never been to TL, only BB, and we thought the wave pool at BB was terrible! Very rough!
I grew up going to wild waves all summer long and one of the best parts was the wave pool! Now dont get me wrong, they had huge waves there too! But they werent people topplers like at BB...

Put it this way, last time, me, my dd (then 2) my niece (then 4) and son (then 5) tried to go in, we were only up to my knees, and i was getting knocked about and thrashed!

If this is the calmer of the two, I guess I will steer clear of the wave pool at TL as well!
Bummer, cuz I used to just love a wave pool! My kids are scared to death of them now.... guess we'll tough it out over in Tykes Peak... they had a blast over there!

gabygrennell,
I think you're the first person who has said that they think BB's wave pool is rougher than TL's. :)
Our son doesn't swim yet, so we don't go too far into wave pools...usually just sit on or near the "shore" and wait for the waves to come in. Despite not enjoying the wave pool, how did your children like BB?

I think the reason why TL's wave pool is rougher is because it also offers surfing lessons whereas BB doesn't. You probably need the stronger waves to surf on.

I'm a big guy (250+ pounds) and the wave pool at TL knocked me on my rear the first time I experienced it. It dragged me a couple of feet before I could get my bearings.

I saw one girl (probably about 12) not paying attention and she got slammed into one of the benches near the pool.

I've never experienced BB, but I can vouch that if you're not ready for the wave pool at TL, it will hit you hard. Even if you are ready, it's packing quite a force for a wave pool.

Ditto to what they said. You can take surfing lessons at TL, every so often it puts out a 6 foot wave. Then, the smaller waves are as choppy as BB. It's the big one that gets people. However, I love it; no one else in my family does, and I'm 52.

The best way to enjoy BB wave pool is to get an inner tube and float out to where you can't touch the bottom well, then you won't get brush burn from the rough bottom. We were out in the deep part for an hour just bouncing with the waves.

I agree that you need to be ready for the waves at Typhoon Lagoon, but I wanted to add that my entire family absolutely loved the wave pool! That included ds who was turning 5 on the trip, but he is a water lover anyway.

We haven't tried the wave pool at Blizzard Beach, so I can't compare them.

We love the pool at TL. The waves are not constant. There are two sets of waves that are produced in this pool, and they change approx every half hour. The first set are just fun bobbing waves that continue to come. (Like a normal wave pool) After a half hour a loud horn will sound and that means that the waves will be changing. At this point they have changed into 4 foot waves that come at you with alot of speed and force. These waves will continue to come every 90 seconds. You will hear the loud horn and will have plenty of time to exit the pool if you don't wish to experience the waves.

I'm 58 and I love the waves at TL, but I was surprised by a wave as I was getting out of the pool, and yes, it knocked me down, even though I thought I was far away from the "action."

AJKMOM (or anyone else),
Okay, here's my dumb question for the day: Do they provide the inner tubes for you at the wave pool, or do you get them from somewhere else in the park then take them to the wave pool?

There are single innertubes around the pool area. When we went in March, it wasn't crowded, so they were easy to find. If you are going during a busy time, make sure you find one and hold on to it until you are done.

TL definately has a much stronger wave pool, but it does depend on what each child is like, are they a little on the dare devil side or on the more timid side? The last time we went my youngest was 7 and she only weighed about 45 pounds but there was no way we would have been able to keep her out of the pool at TL. We are leaving tomorrow and she can't wait to go back to TL, now she is a dare devil!

OK,
now it is all coming back to me!
I remember all too well the rough bottom at BB wave pool, is the one at TL the same?
And why on earth is it so rough? Me and the kids had little scrapes on our legs/feet/knees... I know we wont be doing the wave pool while at BB this time, but would like to ck out the one at TL...
other than the wave pool at BB, our kids absolutely loved it!
The kiddie area was awesome!
Cant wait to ck out TL!!!
