We will be taking our first ever cruise on the Disney Dream May 17, 2012 with our 3 children (13,12,9) and I was wondering if anyone has used the wave phones on board? Are they worth it or should we bring our own walkie talkies?

First off there is no charge for the wave phones each stateroom gets two.
The were awesome. dd 10 and dh 14 had them figured out within the first 15 min of being in our rooms. They were constantly texting each other when we got separated. dd made a friend who would phone the wave phones to find her or make a plan to meet. I didn't worry about where dd was as if she wasn't with us we sent a phone with her and could always reach her. I don't think you will need walkie talkies

My family have used them and loved them. No reception problems, they worked all over the ship. They are free so it's worth it. You only get 2 on most cabins, and you can rent additional ones. There is a $250 charge if you loose any. The kids club use the wave phones now instead of the pagers.

The phones worked great! Each room gets two and they have different number... for example our room was 2046 and the numbers were 20461 and 20462... they worked great all over the boat and on the island, don't bother with walkie talkies

awsome..i was going to post a question on the phone numbers.. so its room number plus 1 or 2 :)

We loved the wave phones too. The only specific recommendation is to make sure both are charged. There is only a single charger in the room and when we arrived in our room, one was dead. Good thing we checked because we immediately charged it and by the time the drill was over it was fully charged and ready for use that night (which we did).

I am very excited to learn about these. What a great idea! I was nervous about my 11 year old, this makes me feel so much better! Thanks for the post!

Anyone know what happens when your room # has 6 digits? Does it just become 100001 and 100002? (I wondered if it was restricted to 5 digits.) I seem to remember to call the room phone, you would put 41 at the beginning. Anyone notice if for the 6 digit room #s if it would be 41-10000 or 4-10000? Just curious how this going to work since the Dream has some 6-digit stateroom numbers.

This may have been answered already but are the wave phones only on the dream ?

The Wonder had Wave Phones so I'd assume the same is true for the Magic. They were great and we used them constantly.

I personally thought they were a dang nuisance! We didn't use them, but they sit there, taking up one of the already scarce plugs, with a really bright led and they beep insistantly if they need a charge. If it were up to me, the room host would take them away on the first day and not bring them back until I'm gone.

Hi,
I have a question about the wave phones as well, as we will be going on a cruise on the Wonder in August. When you are calling your room or someone else's room do you change the process of how you type the numbers in? Also, is it you type in 41-room # for the phone number? Finally, I was wondering when you call a person on the ship do the phone numbers change wheather you are calling the room or the wave phone? Sorry if this is too long, and I hope it makes sense of what I am asking.:)
Thanks,
Vicki

Thank you for all of the information. It sounds like the wave phones will be better than walkie talkies. We can't wait to cruise!!!

The wave phones are much better than walkie talkies. The phones are just like regular phones where people around you won't hear your conversation. A plus for both sides! The walkie talkies are annoying because everyone around you hears both sides of your conversations--and usually very loudly.

Also, we used the wave phones mainly for texting between kids and adults. Mainly non-time critical messages like "leaving the Edge for the Aqua Duck now". Perfect usage model.

I was actually looking to get a few of the TriSquare radios for this same purpose (talk/text on ship/CC/Nassau). Good thing I didn't get them since the wave phones did everything we needed (except for Nassau).

Did all of your kids just put them in their pockets? If so I ds will not be able to use some of his shorts due to no pockets. Anyone buy a case of some sort? I am sure I can just use pocket shorts for him, but I was just wondering. Thanks.

Pop the battery out, unplug the charger. No more beeping, no more LED.

They do have an off switch....I know, because we turned ours off....if you can't get that to work, it is easy to remove the battery. ;)

There are instructions in the room with the phones that explain exactly how to call other phones and how to call the rooms

To call a room phone you have to dial 41 + the room number

To call another wave phone you just dial the room number plus the 1 or 2 after depending on which phone you are calling. You have to know which phone is which otherwise if you call yourself you will get a busy signal
