Waterproofing Basement?

We have been cleaning out the basement and discovered that we have had some water coming in(not very much) and some efforessence(sp?, white stuff on bottom part of walls). I will be having a couple of waterproofing Basement companies come in to check next week. I have never done this before, can someone tell me what to look for in a company? What will be my options to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated!

We had that done along the frontside of our home back in Chicago several years ago. As I recall they worked from the outside and dug down to the foundation. I also remember they put some kind of spongy material into the earth there to help absorb water. We never had another problem with water! As for the company, look for one that has served the community for many years and is in good standing with the BBB. A good company will also give you references to check out.
