Likewise, if they didn't intend for people to use chairs for extended periods of time, they would have had way fewer chairs since they really intend for the guests to play in the wave pool, use the slides, float in the lazy river, shop in the stores and dine at the dining facilities. Why even bother with lounge chairs? Why not just put a few benches here and there for guests to sit on in between attractions like in the theme parks?
This isn't really an accurate representation.
Some people DO actually enjoy sitting on a lounge chair and taking a nap, sunning themselves or just resting lying down...
The reason why they have lounge chairs is because quite a good percentage of people actually do like to lounge.
The argument of saying why have lounge chairs as opposed to benches is a little obtuse. The idea of getting people to lay down and soak up sun in a lounge chair, or to have something that grandparents or people who wouldn't otherwise go to a water park with their families to do while the rest are on the rides makes sense from a Disney standpoint... having benches only would cause a double negative effect... A. It would discourage the people who want to spend a day with their families who don't want to be on rides from going ( hence fewer admissions ) B. It would cause crowd the rides more... meaning less people would want to go.
But, i'll play the game of going to extremes to make a point.
If Disney intended for people to get there early to claim a chair for the day... why didn't they put a little place on the chair for the earlybirds to write their names or place a namecard so it's clear who the "ownership" belongs to? I find it hard to believe that Disney intended the lounge chairs to be towel dryers...
Ps... laying in a lounge chair for an hour IS an extended period of time.. and I don't think Disney has any problem with someone doing so... Hell, I don't think ANYONE here has a problem with people using the chairs for extended periods of time... that is EXACTLY the point many of us are making... go ahead and use the chair as long as you wish... but by using it, I mean a HUMAN using it... Are you really trying to imply that Disney's intended "use" was to store flipflops and towels?
Maybe the reality is that Disney puts out so many chairs because they are aware that the vast majority of them get reserved by people who don't want to let other guests go near them.
If everyone shared a little more and was less territorial then Disney could have fewer chairs out there, yet the same amount of people utilizing a chair for what it was designed for... and maybe they could have built another attraction in the space they save.
