Water shoes

Just wondering if water shoes are frequently worn on excursions or even in the spa onboard. In some trip reports I've read, some people use them, some don't. I've never used them when I go the beach here in NYC, so I have no experience.
Are the underwater surfaces hazardous on the islands? Should I buy water shoes for my family? I'd really rather not have to carry anything extra if not necessary.
Also, when water shoes are worn, are they worn only in the water, or are they comfortable enough to wear for the day when we debark for excursions?
Thanks!

::yes::
I would strongly advise you to buy water shoes. Especially for CC adult beach. There are very sharp shells and spiny sea urchins. I know because I stepped on a sea urchin at the adult beach! And, BOY... did it hurt!!! Someone else stepped on it after I did, in the same area in the water. I went to the 1st aid station all the way back to the family beach area, and all they told me was, yes that's a sea urchin all right. Soak your foot in the hot tub when you get back to the ship. It will start to disolve the spikey things in your foot. My foot was tender for almost a year after that! So...I would buy the water shoes.:idea:

My family uses water shoes. We also normally use them at home when visiting beaches on the Jersey shore.
We wear them to the beach, on the beach to protect our tootsies from the hot sand and in the water to avoid cuts from broken shells and rocks on the bottom.

They are not a comfortable as sneakers, but they are good enough to wear on the ride to the beach, and while you are there.

I bring them every time....at Castaway Cay the bottom is not like a beach bottom,...there is a LOT of grass and stuff and it feels really yukky on the feet...and the sand is HOT when you are walking up for lunch!

I second the hot sand. Last year I made the mistake of leaving my water shoes off after snorkling.

The walk to lunch and back was miserable.

I found a pair of Sketchers sandels at Shoe Carnival that work both for water and for walking. The were great to wear at our theme/water park all day long.

I've never had so many women ask me where I found my shoes before. I heard lots of, "I wish I had found those"

Another option is rafting type sandals (ie Teva's). They are very comfortable and great for water.

I always make my kids wear them at water parks. I've seen people spit while waiting in line, and once a mother didn't want to get out of line to take her daughter to the restroom - yuk! People who came later had no idea! It also makes it easier than having to run back to your belongings anytime you want to go somewhere that wouldn't be appropriate barefoot.

I also advise the use of water shoes. We came upon sea urchins at Blue Lagoon excursion in Nassau and also my son had trouble with bare feet at the teen beach. I've always worn water shoes in the ocean since being bit by a crab on the foot (at least I think that's what it was) at the Jersey shore.

The first time we were on CC at the adult beach we had a hard time finding a place to walk in the water that wasn't painful. Our most recent trip we wore slippers from Vans. They are just sandles with a thick rubber souls. They were also useful to keep bare feet off the hot sand. So I would recommend them for more than just the water.

There are some new shoes out called Croakies ( I think) that are made of neoprene like surgeons stand on when operating. They look like ugly chunky shoes but they are comfortable (and come in colors). I have BAD feet and can't wear most water shoes including Teva's for any length of time. While these are expensive they are so comfortable. No blisters at all, and water drains out of the holes on the top and sides. Since we live in "hurricane city" in other words the Plywood state, I have been wearing them alot lately and could even see me wearing them around the parks. ( I would normally wear hiking boots to the parks with my 2 pairs of hiking socks....) Expensive for water shoes but worth it! Found them at Bass pro shop for around $35.
