Hi All -

I'm narrowing down my selection for a lightweight, point and shoot, shock and water resistant camera for beach, deep sea fishing, Disney and other active vacation uses.

I'm down to a choice between the

Sony Cybershot DSC TX20; and

Nikon Coolpix AW100

I'd love some quick first hand impressions from anyone who is familiar with one or the other or both, to help me make the final choice.

Thanks,

Jane

We bought the sony cybershot (last year's model) before our trip to Hawaii last year. We are very happy with the photos it takes. We went snorkeling and the underwater pics DH took were very good. I still love my DSLR but we will be taking the Sony along to use in the waterparks this year. I was so happy with it that I bought my DD the same camera in pink for Christmas.

Good luck with your shopping, I'm sure they are both very good cameras!

Just bought the Nikon AW100 last week, and am still working it out.

Just got back from Great Wolf Lodge, and it took better photos inside than our daughter's Fuji waterproof camera (XP20), but still not happy with the photos, which could have been my fault, as it was busy, and I didn't have time to properly play with the settings.

I shot some photos on auto, sports, etc., so I need some more time to play with it underwater in snorkeling conditions, and outside in the sun before I can give it a total recommendation.

I will say the battery rocks - I took over 200 photos, spread out over 3 days, and it's still on pretty much full power. The Fuji lets you take about 50 photos, and then the battery is pretty much done, I kid you not!

The Nikon is a lightweight camera, tons of settings, amazing screen and great locking system.

Happy camera shopping, Tiger

me & 2 other family members have the nikon & we LUV it...great pics...easy to use, lightweight, & comes in funky colors

used it on my cruise & got some great shots in the pool & in the ocean...even captured the droplets of water my daughter was splashing me w/ and some great mid air shots of her jumping into the pool

Thanks all!

They both seem like such great cameras!

Today is my B-day, and DH asked what I wanted. I told him I had both the cameras in my Amazon shopping cart, still trying to decide. He went out shopping last night, so we'll see which one he picks.

Happy birthday!

Can't wait to hear what camera you end up with.

Happy shooting, Tiger :)

I'm not sure if it's something you use, but if you have Eye-Fi SD cards, the Sony has full support for the Eye-Fi cards whereas the Nikon does not.

The Sony knows not to turn off the camera if the Eye-Fi card is uploading, has an icon on the screen to show when it's transmitting, and has a menu option to turn the card's wi-fi connection on/off.

The Eye-Fi will still work in the Nikon, but you need to make sure the camera stays on to allow transfers to finish and there's no way to disable the wi-fi from the menu.
