Water Parks

We're going to WDW for a week in August. It's been many years since we have gone in the summer but we now have to deal with a school schedule. I am planning to spend a day at each water park (if they are both open hopefully). I am guessing that we had better get there at opening to get chairs, where is a good spot to go park ourselves with a 4.5 yo at each park? I will want a shady area if possible.

Thank you!

We usually visit Typhoon lagoon and usually bring our own lunch. But the burgers at Leaning Palms have been calling my name lately. With a 4.5 yo I would probably set up in the Ketchakiddie Kreek area. There are plenty of shady spots and as long as the child is under 48" they can do all the activities. Another spot is on the side of the wave pool by the kinda kiddie slides. Our girls loved that slide area and then we could take them to the wave pool easily. Plus there's a shallow area near there if the kids are afraid of the waves.

I work at Typhoon in the merchandise store. I don't get out into the park hardly at all, so you might actually get better information from TL guests who frequent the park. But, I'll share with you what I think I know. There is a section at Typhoon for little kids (under 48 inches tall, I believe). There is some shade over there along the outskirts of that area. There is also some shade near Crush Beach (a beach area near the water coaster, Crush 'n Gusher). Crush Beach is about as far away from the kiddie area as you can get. There are pockets of shade around the park. But, quite literally, the shade moves throughout the day as the hours go by.

The only way to ensure shade is to rent a premium space -- an umbrella and chairs for four people maximum; or a cabana that holds six people at a certain price, but can accommodate up to 10 people with the extra four people paying extra dollars. Just like hotel rooms change prices throughout the year, the premium space rental fees change throughout the summer. The umbrella spaces are reasonably priced. The cabanas can be expensive...although, who am I to say what is expensive -- I guess that's an individual call. But, the cabanas come with furniture, a locker in the cabana, an ice chest with all the bottled water you care to drink, refillable soft drink mugs, towels, and an attendant who will get your food and drinks for you.

There are two what I call "restaurants" at TL -- The Leaning Palms and Tillie's. Both serve the standard sandwiches, wraps, salads, etc. I think Tillie's has a fruit salad. And there are other food places around the parks -- pastries, funnel cakes, ice cream, as well as a bar, should you wish to enjoy an adult beverage.

If you don't rent a cabana, I highly suggest you rent a locker. Do not leave anything of value on a beach chair while you run around the park. Umbrella and cabanas can be rented at the main merchandise store or towels and lockers can be rented at High and Dry Rentals. You will encounter both places as soon as you walk down the sidewalk into the park. If you are staying at a Disney Resort, you can bring towels from there if you'd like. Or bring your own towels.

So, that's what I have to share. But here is my disclaimer -- the water parks are currently going through their annual "refurb." Since Blizzard Beach closed in October for it's refurb, and while Typhoon is closed starting in January, I am deployed to Hollywood Studios. As such, I have absolutely no idea what changes will be made at Typhoon and what will be different when I get back there.

Debbie

I should add, if you think you'll want to rent a premium space, do it in advance by calling 407-wdw-play. In August, if you wait until the day of your visit, you'll be out of luck.

Thanks Debbie! I have considered the umbrella areas and will think that one over although we will be four adults and one child. I figure for the most part we will be mulling about the park. The cabanas are much pricier than I am willing to pay for a place to sit for one day. :) We will definitely rent a locker.

Well, since nobody has commented yet on Blizzard Beach, which I love, I'll chime in. There is a lot of seating right in the kids area, so I'd set up camp there. As with TL, the shade moves around. We like renting the umbrellas, but I'm not sure if there are any rentals in that area. WRT food, as a PP, we usually take lunch in a small cooler. We've actually never eaten a meal at BB, come to think of it (but have had sandwiches at Tilly's at TL; large portions and decent, but of course pricey). I really like taking my own so I can eat whenever with no line. But for a snack, you MUST have the little donuts dipped in chocolate!! So wish they sold them somewhere in the parks! In August, I think a two-waterpark trip sounds perfect. I'd squeeze them in between park days for a break. 3 of my family prefer BB; DD likes TL best. I really love them both and I don't generally care for waterparks. Have fun!!!

I'm looking at how I think our schedule will work for the week and it's looking like Blizzard Beach will be after the MK. I don't know that we will get there first thing in the morning so I'm leaning towards booking the umbrella just so I know we have a spot. It doesn't matter what time you show up if you book it ahead, correct? It will mostly be my mother using the lounge chair and the rest of us will spend most of the time in the water. Will it be a problem if we sit to eat there with 4 adults and 1 child? I figure my son can sit next to my mother on the lounge chair just to eat.

The last time we went to Blizzard Beach it was really hard to find chairs and it was in November, I can't imagine how it will be in August.

Thanks!

We've done the umbrellas at both WPs and love it. Probably will do it every time if available. No, you'll be fine eating there--there are usually a few extra chairs in the area, but we usually share too--it's just easier when you're all eating chips out of the same bag! LOL (Actually that's a joke--we never do that because it mortifies my mom.) Yes, if you've prebooked you can show up anytime. I like using the waterparks as a sleep in (a little) day like that.

We use to have a PAP and went to the water parks frequently. At TS we found spots by the wading pool at Crush n Gusher. That's where ds spent most of his time digging in the sand and swimming in the wading pool.

At BB, we'd get lockers at the Ski Patrol area so we were near the kiddie and pre-teen area. It was hard to find seats in the kiddie area and we'd often end up at the ski patrol area finding chairs.

The umbrella bookings are for 4. 4 adults PLUS one child does not equal 4. I don't know how stringently they enforce their rules.

My mother can't swim, she comes along because she doesn't want to stay back at the resort alone. I really want to just ensure she has a lounge chair to sit and read while we go around the water park. 90% of the time it will be just her, if they refuse to allow the five of us to sit and eat I'll take my son somewhere else to sit. It's really no biggie to me.

We have rented the chairs and umbrella at Blizzard Beach and LOVED it. We almost had the area to ourselves last July. We will be renting them again for sure at TL this July. I will pack a book and get in some relax time while my husband and 8 year are still going strong. I will do the rides with them once and then relax while they are still going strong. For us the chair and umbrella are worth it.

Thank you, I think I will just go ahead and book the umbrella spots. I just like knowing there we will have reserved chairs to use, the last time it was a madhouse trying to find a spot to sit.

I also loved that we had more space and people were not right on top of us.

They were $50 something last summer. We said felt that it was well worth it. You don't have people right on top of you.

We may do this for our May trip. I don't know how booked the water parks will be at the end of May, but I'd rather enjoy my time than feel super crowded.
