It was just on TV. Orange county sheriff deputies manning speed detectors are dressing as elves so as not to draw attention that they are law officers.

In one spot in two hours they pulled over 150 cars and issued over 180 citations.

Shhhh...don't give the Illinois cops with their undercover construction vans any new ideas...

And I'm sure this stunt is all about the safety, and not about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Definitely about safety :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :duck:

Notice how more and more they are sounding like politicians.

Didn't know they had a speed limit in Orange County...

only 2 speeds I've observed is "bumper-to-bumper" & "pedal-to-the-metal".

They showed that today during the noon news . So funny but sad .

In a related story...

I saw Santa Claus driving the Lynx Holiday Bus! I really wish I could have gotten a picture of that.

Its a funny thing. Those that obey the speed limit rarely get a speeding ticket.

I may not be a police officer in elves clothing nor play one anywhere but I am a thinker

Who are they? Post was from a dis board member not from a politician.

Again its all about laws and obeying them.

And btw traffic tickets are a good source of revenue but again if you obey the speed limit - ok you know the rest.

Two speed limits in OC huh? 0 mph and infinity mph. Have that on the LIE on Long Island too but then again a lot of the same drivers.

For a couple years running back in the 90's, cops in a small town between Akron and Cleveland would set up shop down the road from Blossom, a big outdoor concert venue, whenever Jimmy Buffett came to town. An undercover cop would be sitting on the trunk of a car parked on the shoulder of the road, raising a beer in a toasting motion to passing cars. Other cops hidden in the woods next to the road would look for drivers or passengers raising their own drinks in response. Those cops would then radio ahead to uniformed cops in marked cars who then had probable cause to pull people over and do field sobriety tests on the drivers as well as search for open containers of alcohol.

Our town believes in enforcing the speed limit and does it by making the police visible. All cars are parked in plain site and radar/laser guns are left on so radar detectors are triggered. And they still write tickets.

The chief says this does two things. It slows them down in our jurisdiction and keeps the officers free to answer calls.

Also we have a storage spot for confiscated cars involved in dui of alcohol and drugs that can be seen by the public. You will be surprised by the number of cars there. I think the city makes more money selling them on e-bay than by hiding and writing tickets. In this state they can be confiscated.

Uh, yeah... because ELVES on the side of the road are going to draw MUCH less attention that law officers...

I thought the same thing. Elves are not going to draw attention?? Not the norm for our area. Actually if we saw elves on the side of the road I'm not sure if you would feel safe stopping. Let's just tell all of the bad folks out there, dress like an elf and stop a car....don't think so. In our area, during the holidays, if you get a ticket you can just purchase a toy instead of paying for the ticket ($50 value) and all of the toys are donated to needy children in the area. I always thought this was a good idea.

The elves are manning the radar/laser guns. Uniform cops are stopping them.

I must have a qacked sense of humor...I think it is funny. Look, everyone knows the risks of speeding...some will do it with or without elves. Reminds me of the police car I used to see with a manaquin in it. :rotfl: (I just hope he was paying union dues ;))

We still use them around here.

I think it's hysterical. And for those compaining about it, I'd like to hear one valid reason for speeding. Other than your decapitated arm is in your lap and you are driving to the ER or something along those lines, I can't think of a good one.

I am waiting for someone to take their eyes off the road and cause an accident because they were distracted looking at an "elf" with a camera.

I cannot either and I am amazed that people look at it from perspective of the police wanting to make money. Ahhhh, face it, you break the law you are going to eventually get caught and will have to pay. It is not about money, it is about the speed limit. It is a shame that people do not realize that.
