Watch this...I am so NOT getting a flu shot

It is tragic for this young, beautiful, woman, but she's the exception to the rule. I don't think people should base their decision solely on what has happened here since it effects so few people. Any immunization comes with risk and this one is no different.

I don't like when people use scare tactics to try an influence rational decisions. Some people may come to the conclusion that they'd rather not get this shot, but I at least hope they're looking at the entire picture when making such a determination.

For a look at the other side of this debate, go to www.ca.yahoo and read about the 13 year old Canadian boy who very suddenly lost his life due to the flu. Heartbreaking...

The CDC reports there have been 3 cases of dystonia linked to the seasonal flu shot since 1991. They have given out over a billion vaccinations since 1991.. so the likelihood here is 3 out of a billion. That's really going to keep you from getting the shot?

I won't get the flu shot this year either, but this wouldn't influence my decision at all if I was considering getting it.

Sad story, yes. How quickly life can change for a person... my prayers go out to that woman, I can't imagine being in that situation. However, I will still get the H1N1 vaccine. For me, the risk of H1N1 is much more real than the risk of dystonia. I have had the seasonal flu shot before and have not been adversely affected. Of course, for the one in a billion this type of thing does happen to... it's tragic.

Reactions are way under reported. Anyway, everyone has a right to make up their own mind whether or not to get the flu shot based on their own research including this case, as well as all of the other reactions documented in vaers, hearing their neigbors talk about reactions to the shot, the warnings on the insert -- everything should come into play. It is up to each individual and frankly none of anyone elses business WHY they choose to get the shot or not get the shot.

I agree that it's a personal decision and one can use any information available to determine if they want to get the vaccine, or if they want to get it for their child/children.

Personally, I will not be getting it, nor will I allow my children to get it, but I am interested in knowing where you got that information that reactions in and of itself is under reported.

As with any other vaccine, there is always risk. I don't believe the risk outweighs the benefits (for many other reasons), but not because of Dystonia.

You're right. Everyone has to decide what is best for themselves. I tend to be healthy and never get the flu. I do take lots of vitamins and eat healthy most of the time. I suppose if I was a person that got sick easily, I would think about getting the vaccine. I didn't post it to be a scare tactic, but some people think it is so safe and never educate themselves as to what could happen.

You weren't asking me, but I will tell you that I am one of the people who did not officially report a horrible reaction to the flu shot (regular flu shot). I had a reaction so severe I ended up in the hospital---it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Let me add that I am otherwise a healthy person, so no underlying problems to take into consideration.

There are a lot of people who do not report things---for various reasons.

And a lot of times when the reactions get reported it is chalked up to a "coincidence" and not vaccine related.

I have been spending 90% of the past three days beside my daughter's bed, thinking about how I "should have" done this and "should have" done that. If I could go back to before she got this stupid flu, I would be SUCH a HUUUGE nag about taking her vitamins, and would have added more B, C and D... and made sure she had veggies or fruits with every meal... The guilt is eating away at me.

If you have been lucky enough to not get the flu yet, I highly recommend building up your body's system as much as you possible can against it. If you got the flu shot, good for you. DD has no insurance and her dr has not had any of the vaccination available for her (I was going to move a car payment to the end of the loan to pay for an office visit and a shot for her and DH) but now it's too late. Now I have to find out if she should STILL have the shot even though she's had the flu.

DH will be getting the flu shot because he's high risk. I will not because I am at the lowest end of need at this point and will not take it away from someone who needs it more than me.

Though the situation is incredibly sad and heartbreaking it will not keep me from getting a flu shot.

We need to look at things sensibly and look at the odds overall. I'm sure she wanted to get her story out there, but the video should not be used as a scare tactic by anyone. It should be used as "information".

My mom got the flu shot about 11 years ago and her spine tingled. She never reported it to anyone so I believe that reactions are definitely underreported.

We are getting our medical information from youtube now? :sad2:

Yes indeed! Youtube is, after all, like television and, as Homer Simpson likes to say, "If it is on TV, it must be true".

Of course, being a responsible adult, I will always verify information found on Youtube by going to Wikipedia. If it is on Wikipedia, then it must be true.

Finally, of course, much of my research is done on anonymous websites like this one. If someone writes in that they personally know a person who talked to a nurse who said that a dozen doctors said that the best defense against the H1N1 influenza is to take lots and lots of vitamin D, then I am off to the drug store!

Time for the flu dance: :dance3:

Someone like you who is dealing with a real situation makes much more of an impact to me than youtube. I wish your daughter well.
