For those in NJ in particuliar, I got this in my email today from Sen. Frank Lautenberg. I sent an inquiry after seeing the HRC ad. The body of the email follows:
Dear Ms. Lindley :
Thank you for contacting me about the "Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007" ( S. 1105 ). I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
As a longtime advocate of GLBT equality , I firmly believe in recognizing the rights and dignity of all Americans. I am pleased to report that I am once again co-sponsoring this important legislation. Extending the federal definition of hate crimes to include sexual orientation, gender, and disability is an important-and long-overdue-step forward in the fight against senseless acts of violence motivated by hatred. This legislation allows the Federal Government to bring its greater resources to bear in enforcing civil rights and prosecuting these devastating acts .
Recently, the House of Representatives passed this legislation . Please be assured I will fight to ensure passage of the "Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act" in the Senate and that I will continue to support measures to crack down on hate crimes and protect all Americans against violence. Thank you again for contacting me.
