Watch the toddlers near the railings . . .

My son (21 months) wanted a better look at the ducks, so he stuck his head through the railing at MK on the Adventureland side of the castle (in front of the castle). It was not good. We had a heck of a time getting his head unstuck. After a few minutes of unsuccessful attempts and an increasingly panicky toddler, I was close to calling for assistance and imagined firefighters having to cut out the railing to free his poor little head, but thankfully my husband managed to finally get the right angle and pressure and freed my baby.

I was kind of surprised this would happen at Disney. Even the most magical place on earth has its flaws, I guess.

All those green railings seem to be the same, so it could happen anywhere. Beware! pirate:

The same thing happened with my ds 15 months in epcot. He stuck his head through the rails to see the ducks and uhh ohh! We did free him with out too much panic, but it did suprise me he was able to do that.

Scary situation.

And watch your kids on balcony railings. Many small, young children have fallen through these railings.

This happened to DD when she was 4! It was at the train station in Toontown. I was there alone with her and a couple of dads pulled on the bars so she could get out. It's funny now but it sure wasn't at the time. It had a lasting impression her her...she will never stick her head in between bars like that again!

How scary! I'm glad you were able to get him (and the others that were mentioned) out without too much trauma being caused!

Scary. I have always said to my kids to not do that, but I know they can do what they want in a second flat without my consent because their curosity is killing them. Glad it worked out ok.

This happened to our daughter at OKW. We were on the porch off of our room, and she got stuck. The railing there had a wavy pattern, so she could fit her head through the wide part. Scared me half to death!

While waiting for the monorail at the Poly my daughter crawled under the railing and was a couple of steps from the monorail track she could have fallen through luckily we reacted quickly and grabbed her it was really scary

They really should make the railings go all the way down to the ground. Kids move so quickly

The good news about having a kid stick his/her head through the railing is that if that head fit in, it will come back out too (unless bruising/swelling has occured). Of course the ears get mooshed a bit, but if you tuck them in close to the head as you back up the head, it only hurts for a few seconds...

Yes, we are pros at getting heads back through tight spots. Don't ask why...

Same thing happened to us at the same spot. We had a few moments of panic before she was finally freed. Maybe they will change the railings - anything bigger than a coke can should not go through....

My daughter did the same thing in my back yard, between the wrought iron rails on our back stoop. (I was tutoring, and the teenager across the street was watching her. I thought the poor sitter was going to have a heart attack!!!!)

But, as someone else said, that which fits in also fits out. It was a confusing few minutes while I tried to find the exact spot to use, but ultimately we all survived.

My daughter was standing in AK at the train station and pushed her knee through the railing and it got stuck. It took 2 guys each pulling on the bars to get her out.

Being a firefighter for over 30 years we have responded to many children stuck in this situation and I will share how we get the kids out without damage to the child or railing.
What we do is , when we get the child calmed down we have them lay on their belly then roll them on their back, we have them slowly sit up and their head comes through the railing just like it did when they put it through first.
What happens is when they put it through people thry to pull them back and find their ears get stuck coming back through the bars.

We have not had this problem yet but with two small boys I suspect at some stage a head is going to be stuck where it isn't suppose to be. So this information is very handy to know. :)

And, honestly, the first rule is not to panic.

As long as the rest of his body isn't dangling over anything, your first move is to calm him down, then worry about geting him out.

It really is kind of funny, and the type of story you can tell his prom date down the road.

Fireman17, thanks for the good info!

Now that it all turned out fine, I wish we had taken a picture, but obviously at the time that wasn't my first priority. ;)

You'd think that he'd learn his lesson, but no, about 5 minutes later he tried doing the same thing near the Crystal Palace. Sigh.

Don't you wonder how on earth their little minds work???

I can see maybe getting stuck the first time. I don't understand it, but I can see that it's something that might cause a child to wonder "what if...."

But then to go back and try again?????? :)

Luckily DS has a big head!! Haha!! Seriously, I had to get rid of two shirts recently because his head wouldn't fit! Must be all those smarts! ;)

Imagine being the wife of the firefighter you had to call when in this situation. There are certain situations that my kids know I WILL NOT call for help so they best not get their heads stuck. Every time one of them gets near a railing I remind them of who would be coming on that fire truck and subsequently be coming home after his "ribbing" from the guys

We've already had a pair of toy handcuffs break and get stuck on and ds fall while trying to get in the car. yeah...DH won't ever live that one down. I should have gone to the PD to have them cut off instead of the FD.

Seriously, though, calling for help is the best thing to do in any emergency
