The government's decision to squash the transaction has far-reaching implications for US Airways, whose stock price is expected to remain under pressure. The Arlington, Va.-based airline has said it cannot survive over the long haul because it is neither a low-fare carrier nor a big airline.
US Airways, which pays one of the industry's highest costs per seat mile, lost $269 million in 2000. It further racked up a $179 million loss through the first six months ended June 30.
On Friday, US Airways said it soon plans to publicly detail its strategy moving forward. That may include selling off unprofitable network routes or drastic cost cutting measures. "
