Washington DC organised tours?

In just over a month we are off to DC, for 7 nights, and I need to sort out some tours. We basically want an over view of DC so that we can then see what we really like and then go back later in our visit to explore further. So which tours would you recommend and also anything we can do or see in the DC area by tour was thinking of Mount Vernon and Old Town Alexandria?

There's a company called Old Town Trolley Tours which is a hop on/hop off tour. I have been wanting to take that tour for a few years now, but I haven't tried it yet.

The same company also runs tours in Boston and San Diego and I have taken those. They were really well done.

We took a tour bus through Old Alexandria to Mount Vernon. The problem was it as a 4 hour tour. It took us a meandering route that took an hour. It was an hour there, an hour back which only left 2 hours at Mt. Vernon. We were in line to see go through the house for over an hour. We had about 20 minutes to see everything outside of the house, go to the washroom and get back on the bus. We should have taken a cab

We took a cab to the National Cathederal. We took a tour through that as well. That was actually my favorite part of our trip.

Another thing I would recommend is the Holocaust Museum. My boys were 10 and 14 and are still talking about that museum.

If you go to Union Station you can get a ticket for the Tourmobile which has many vehicles (similar to but larger than WDW trams) which go on a fixed route. You can get off an on as many times in a day as you want. And it does include Arlington Cemetary.
