hey guys--my parents are looking at a last minute trip for their anniversary to washington dc...as much as they make fun of me for being on the disboards...they just asked me to post and find out about hotels..
They want something nice they said...thanks for any help

We stayed in 3 pretty nice ones last year.

The Radisson on P Street had huge rooms and we got a great rate through hotels.com. It was close to the metro station and walking distance to lots of great restaurants.

The Courtyard by Marriott Northwest was very nice and also close to the metro station.

The Loews L'Enfant Plaza also has nice rooms and a great pool. It was pretty much across the street from the Smithsonian and a short walk to the Holocaust museum and Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Metro station was right in the basement of the hotel, as well as a small mall.

We've stayed at the Hyatt near the Smithsonians and other attractions, the hockey arena, and Chinatown. The metro runs right underneath and there are some fun restaurants nearby. I booked through AAA and got a great rate that included free parking and buffet breakfast. We'd definitely stay there again.

We also stayed at the Grand Hyatt. I got it on Priceline for $110/nt in May. It was rated a 4 star hotel and was very nice. We walked to the all of the Smithsonian museums and the Metro is connected so it is very convienent. I found that this atrium hotel was very nice. The room sevice we got was also better than I expected. I believe full rack rate this was over $300, so check priceline for a very nice discount on 4 star hotels. This hotel also held our luggage the day we checked out so we could go finish exploring the city before our flight. I would recommend this hotel to your parents.

Much depends on price range, what they like for amenities, and where they want to be in the city. Also, when they want to go...prices in DC right now are through the roof...I had to pay $365 last night for a room that I paid $225 for in August!

Here are my votes in various categories:

Boutique Hotels: The Monaco and the Sofitel - both downtown, very hip, funky fun. The Sofitel is French and has a real European flair. Topaz - closer to Dupont Circle, same brand as the Monaco, very nice.

Luxury Hotels: Hay Adams, St. Regis or Willard - all downtown, near the White House. Very very elegant. Can sometimes get amazing rates on weekends since they tend to be business hotels during the week. We once paid $150 for the St. Regis and got upgraded to a suite!

"Chain" Hotels, non-budget: Westin Grand, nearer to GW and Georgetown, in a lovely neighborhood. Omni Shoreham, up near the zoo also in a very nice neighborhood, near Rock Creek Park, more residential. Capital Hilton.

"Chain" Hotels, budget: Sheraton Four Points on K Street, the neighborhood is much improved there and the hotel is nicer than you'd think. Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites downtown are ok. Embassy Suites on 22nd is a good choice in a good neighborhood.

Hope this helps!

We just stayed at the Westin Grand on M street in August. We really liked it and the location was very safe and conveinient.

You should also look into www.tripadvisor.com It's kind of like the Dis where you can ask questions all about trips. and they review hotels. I always check there before I book anything.

We stayed at the Sheraton National. The rooms were nice and the staff was very friendly. Some rooms have a great view of Arlington, Washington Monument etc. The hotel provides a shuttle to a mall where the metro stops.

Isn't the Sheraton National in Crystal City?

definitely the sofitel if they are looking for something nice.
