Washington DC beltway or alternative Rte?

We're traveling on 12/26, we should hit the DC beltway around 8-8:30 am.....

Since it's a Friday, the day after Christmas (most govt office will probably be closed)...Should we give it a try...If traffic is light, it will probably take 45 minutes off our trip....

I live in Northern Virginia and can tell you that the traffic will be extremely light on Dec. 26. Most folks are off and there will be almost no rush hour traffic. That doesn't guarantee that an accident or some other Act of God won't cause a problem!

i also live in nva. I can tell you this, there is always something going on there. Just have patience it eventually clears up. good luck

I wouldn't worry about the traffic the day after christmas. But technically the Federal Government is open. They haven't told us if they will give us the day off or not. Most of the traffic will be around the Springfield interchange better known as the mixing bowl. A lot of construction going on there, but I would think they wouldn't be doing anything then. There is a Shopping mall there as well and the day after christmas might be some traffic trying to get to the mall. Also you might hit some down in the Woodbridge area where Potomac Mills is, about 25 miles south of the beltway. I've seen traffic backed up on the highway trying to get to the mall around that time of year.

Traffic may be somewhat lighter than on a regular workday. But it will still be a mess. It's always a mess. And when all this new construction is finished, it'll probably STILL be a mess!!!

My Dad uses 301 until he is down past Quantico then hops over to 95 when driving to FL.

Our alternate route is down 81 to Winchester WV and then across 17 to I95 in Fredericksburg....Very easy drive and like I said really only an additional 30-45 minutes ....worth it in busy seasons.....but since we're trying to get to Savannah that 1st day....we're hoping to cut some time off......playin the odds!
