dh and I always stay at L'Enfant Plaza. It is right behind the Air&Space and walking distance to the Mall. It can be a little pricey sometimes tho.

I think this is important. No matter where you stay, book directly with the hotel, why pay extra (middleman) to hotels.com website?
In August we stayed at the Grand Hyatt Washington for $111. a night and the metro is connected to the hotel.

I'm only about 4 inches taller than you and I live here!! Honestly, DC is a very safe city, I never feel at all threatened walking around by myself, even at night. Over the summer we'd take a walk every night before my daughter went to bed and even on nights that my husband was on call I'd go myself without a problem, and it was generally dark when I'd go. Really, the bad parts of DC are not where you'd be going cause there are no touristy things there (like SE DC) so you really don't need to worry about safety any more than you would in LI (and I say that coming from NJ, in a very small, safe NYC suburb).

I live in D.C. too and I feel very safe here. Always have. The only time I was ever a victim of a crime (held up at gunpoint), was in an upscale suburb 40 miles outside of D.C.

I like some of the boutique hotels in the city - the Hay Adams being a favorite. If you don't care for that sort of hotel, The Embassy Suites is in a great location (I live only about 10 blocks from it) - and I've always had good luck with Embassy Suites in general. Also the Grand Hyatt, which has a Metro stop right in the hotel.

There are only two hotels within a reasonble walking distance of King Street Metro-- Hilton and Embassy Suites. There is a Holiday Inn within walking distance of the Eisenhower Ave metro station. Not a very nice looking area, but a safe area. Since this is a bit off the beaten path, it may be cheaper. I see lots of tourists using metro from this hotel as I commute this route everyday.

That Hilton is directly across the street tho, right? Its nice, I've visited people staying there before.
