Washing shirts with iron on transfers - Avery

Any tips?
I just bought the dart t shirt transfers and hope to do a shirt tonight.
I know I have to wash it before (cotton/poly blend) but how do they hold up after ? Hand wash ? Inside out ?

I want to use an iron on on dark t-shirts too. Any tips you can give after you finish your dark shirt.....?

of course, it doesn't explain why some turned out ok and others did not but still....
