Washer Question

My cousin is in the process of looking for a new washing machine. She currently has a Bosch front loader that she is leaving with the house she just sold. She has also had a Maytag Neptune in a previous home. She told me that she had/is having a problem with both of these front loaders. She told me that mold is growing around a gasket in these front loaders that creates a terrible odor. She said that this is a common problem. She has had the gasket replaced (once by the manufacturer, once at her own cost) but the problem on both of these machines came back. She got rid of the Neptune and replaced it with the Boach thinking she wouldn't have the same problem, but she does. She is now thinking of going back to a top loader. She likes the front loader because it uses less water and is gentler on clothes. Has anyone heard of this before? Anyone else having this problem? I can not believe with the extra cost of a front loader that these machines are still so popular. Also she is looking for suggestions on washers. Thanks Jay

PS - She does use chlorine bleach regularly in her washes but it has not stopped the problem. I thought that would kill any mold but it hasn't helped.

We just got a Fisher & Paykel top loader. I can't believe how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE this machine. It's energy star rated, low water consumption, and I swear, if I had the right manual, I could land the shuttle with it.

What I really love about it, is that it spins so much excess water out of the clothes, that my old 12 year old dryer is working better......

Lowe's is the only dealer around here for them.

Most front loaders have that problem, but not usually mold, more like just a musty smell sometimes. The water does collect on the gasket, so we just leave the door open when not in use. No problems with mold or musty odors so far!

I have had ours for 4 years now, and as long as I keep the door open between washings, never have a problem with odors.

Another happy Fisher Paykel customer here! They are energy efficient and not terribly expensive. We spend so much less time doing laundry since we got it.

Does the top loading dryer load easier then the front loader? DH and I saw the set a Lowe's a couple of weeks ago and I fell in love with the set.

There is a class action lawsuit involving Maytag and the Neptune washing machine regarding the mold problem on the front loaders.

We went round and round about those new frontloaders 2 weeks ago and ended up buying the old fashioned top loader. I was also told you have to use a specific low sudsing detergent for the frontloaders, too

I am seriously WILLING my dryer to die, so we can get the matched one.

I didn't see a top loading dryer when we bought ours. We bought it at this enormous appliance store that I thought had everything. I guess they don't!

I'd hate a top loading dryer because I use the tops of the washer and dryer to hold my folded clothes. I'd lose half my folding surface!

Thanks everyone. I will pass it on to my cousin. Sounds like the Fisher Paykell is well liked. Anyone have any idea how reliable they are? Don't know much about them. Are they expensive?

Pinnie - I did not know about the Class Action against Maytag. At one time they had the best reputation and now it seems like they are just another company that makes appliances. Consumer Reports does not give them the highest marks for reliability and repairs either.

I haven't heard of any reliability problems with the Fisher Paykel. Our washer was $550 (we got a $50 discount from the store) and then we got a $100 energy savings rebate from the state. It was comparable to alot of other large capacity washers and much less expensive than the Neptunes and Duets.
