Not rude at all. We try to not let too many people IRL even know DW is a doctor. It makes life a LOT easier.

No that is fine. I have a bad habit of referring to the Pediatricians in our practice as Fienman, Anderson etc. Not to their face but to the nurse when I make an appointment. I do it with all my DRs. Is that bad? I've been going to the same office for 19 years.

I used to work for the president of a college whom we ALWAYS called Dr. Lastname. Since we worked so closely together, the others in the office and I were allowed to call him by the nickname "Dr. H." He was an older man, had been president for years, and everyone in our small community referred to him as Dr. Lastname. It would always throw me for a loop when his wife would call and ask for Jim. I would be thinking, "Who the heck is Jim?"

I call my doctor by her first name, always. Actually, I call all the doctors we see by their first names. If I am telling someone about them, say our allergy specialist, I use their first and last name. The only one I know that insists on being called Dr is the twins' 5th grade teacher that has a PhD.

I have that problem with some of my college professors! There are a couple of them that I've become friends with outside of school (one has since resigned from her position), and I have such a hard time bringing myself to call them anything but Dr. XXX. But I have had professors (Drs) who introduced themselves initially by their first names, so it was much easier referring to them that way.

I should add that she was a former student of mine and I still call her by her first name to her face but when I refer to her infront of the kids I call her Dr. _______.
