Well, there is no Debate Board any more!

A guy I've done some regular work for is a disaster. EVERYTHING he does turns to you-know-what (and it's not gold!) Mistakes abound right, left and centre. Yet he has managed to provide for a family of about 5 kids in reasonable style.

I think he is the most incapable person I have ever met, I'm not joking when I say everything he does goes wrong due to the way he does it. It's gobsmacking!

Anyhow, my DH says I expect too much of people, that this guy is more of the norm than the exception. He reckons that most people are hugely incompetent at their jobs.

Would you agree?

Edited to say:
Sorry, the question should say "to DO their job?", hey, no one's perfect, right?!

I have come across alot of people these past few weeks that doesn't know much about their job or particular tasks. If they were new at their job, then fine everyone learns from the start right.
There has been alot of people that also lie on their job applications to get a job. Especially here if you know another language, it can benefit you in getting the job, but there are many people that don't really know the languages they say they know, and get the job. When they are said to use that particular language, and they ask for help, it really bugs me. Why say you know that language in the first place.

I dunno. I've only had a couple jobs, with a variety of co-workers. The "professional" jobs, people seemed to know what they were doing. Most of us were quite good at what we do. I wasn't as good, and it made me re-think my career.

I've been working in retail for a month now, and people know what they are doing - but most of my co-workers just don't care. They aren't incompetant, just, well, lazy.

that most people are competant where I work. We have "cleaned house" over the last couple of years and got rid of the ones who were nor performing the way they should.

I don't think people are necessarily incompentent. I do think there is a serious lack of pride in one's work though.

I work with a lot of clients who get jobs and do a poor job and their excuse is that this isn't the job they really want. It's like they are saying they will take pride in their work and do their best when it's their dream job.

I was brought up to perform all jobs with pride and do the best of my ability. Now sometimes people don't know every aspect of their job and they are still learning. I have no problem with that as long as they try to help you or find someone who can. I hate to hear people tell me "I don't know" or "that's not my dept"

I would have to echo Pooh Girl 71's thoughts. I think it has to do with how they were raised and the role models that served them. Kind of a Nature vs. Nurture type thing. I have seen hard workers who give 110% and I have seen lazy do-nothings just there for the paycheck. Incompetence implies a knowledge deficit, either by their own doing (didn't care to learn, or didn't pay attention) or lack of training (management faulted the employee, and evetually the consumer and co-workers).

now a days I don't know... I know "back in the day" people worked hard and felt good about it. Don't see a lot now

There are just some people that will never be competent no matter how hard they try or how nice they are.
