"Warning: Sledding is a dangerous activity...

Ds had a friend in Kindergarten who lost an eye sledding. Hit a branch or something, eye got injured, infected, and had to be removed. So sad. That said, like LOTS of sports, sledding can be dangerous. Use common sense. Don't sled around trees, don't sled into roads, don't go down hills that are too steep, make sure kids leave enough room between each sledder (so the fast kid coming down doesn't hit the slow kid who is ahead of him.) COMMON SENSE! Sledding is probably no more dangerous than skiing or snowboarding or skateboarding.... just use caution! Have fun!.........P

we know a girl who was in a horrible sledding accident. She and a friend hit a tree on the way down. Her friend died and she was in a coma for months. When she came out, she was not her old self and had to learn everything all over. :sad1:

A friend of mine hit a tree with her leg in a sledding accident. Her leg stopped, but her body kept going. Can you say, "compound fracture?" She spent all of about a month during college without a knee brace because of the multiple surgeries she had to repair her knee.

The good part is that she decided that she was going to be an orthopedic surgeon because of that accident. She changed her mind in medical school and decided to be a dermotologist instead. She knew that she could wear nice clothes and no one would pee or bleed on her. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

When I was in 3rd or 4th grade, I was sledding with some friends. I had fallen off the sled, slid across the now-packed snow (more like ice, really) and went head-first into a tree. I blacked out momentarily, and had a huge gash on top of my head, which resulted in a concussion. I'm glad I live in a place now where sledding doesn't really happen much.

(For the record, I know my kids could be hurt just as bad, or worse, doing other "kid" things...biking, swing set, etc. But, after having my own bad experience with sledding, I'd just rather they not partake in it :flower: )

We had this local church on a huge hill - I remember hating being driven there because going up the hill to park even seemed scary! So, needless to say, it was a BLAST to sled down! Not that it snows much here, but we had our moments. Anyways, my dad would have to stay at the bottom to catch us from keeping us from going out into the street. Other kids wouldn't do that, so I can imagine how dangerous that would be sledding right onto a two lane street of cars!
But...I broke my arm jumping out of a swing very badly and it still hurts me to this day when it is cold and rainy outside, so I think there's lots of childhood activities that can be risky. I don't let my kids do much, but I know I am going to have to back off eventually to let them have some fun! ::yes::

One of my girlfriends Dads was sliding down a hill on a plastic sled. There was a branch or piece of wood or something which went through the sled and into his---um......bottom. Horrible. He recovered but had to have one of those bag things after to go to the bathroom. It has always been hard for me to sled after that!!!

DS injured his arm years ago on a pretty big hill.

We still go sledding but stick to much smaller hills now.

Wow, I knew kids could get hurt sledding but I never thought of people actually dying or going into a coma. That is very scary. Thank goodness our "sledding hill" has a medium sized hill with a long stretch of flat land and no where near any streets, fences or trees.

Sad sledding warning:

A few years back a grandfather took his grandchild sledding (around 3-4, I think). The grandpa thought it would be safest for the child to be up front, where he could hold onto him. Unfortunately, his body weight crushed the child when they hit a tree on the way down. The child was killed. What was supposed to be a happy, fun event turned instantly into a horrible tragedy.

Sledding can be very dangerous...just think, fast moving body hitting solid objects.

DH and I were out geocaching last week...found ourselves in a pretty nice park...we were walking down this snow covered hill after finding the cache. There were sled-marks all over the place.

we see that one sled trail ended where the bleacher was

hope to god there wasn't a kid on the sled at the time!

My best friend in high school broke his collar bone sledding. And just about a week and a half ago, there was a teenager on the local news who broke her back tubing. Luckily they kept her still, so she was not paralyzed, but I have seen the video several times and it just freaks me out watching her crash!
