OK - so it's the middle of the night and my little guy just got sick ...
POLL- how much would you tip housekeeping?

In the middle of the whole clean up my DH is all worried about tipping housekeeping! Who were there in 2 seconds with clean bedding/towels, etc. and did a great job cleaning up!

I think we went too long this afternoon without eating, and my son ate way too much at dinner. I haven't been feeling well the last 24 hours or so, and thought it was allergies or a cold. I sure hope we don't have the flu.

Housekeeping was great and the little one is settled down. We are staying at The Grand Californian. The front desk called security to get some Pepto from the store as it is closed. And apparently they will shampoo the carpets and do a more thorough job in the morning...

Lovely. This is all I want to worry about the next couple days. And I don't want to take him out and about in the parks if he is going to get other kids sick. Sick at Disneyland - no fun!

Did security make you pay for the Pepto or was it complementary from Disney?

As long as you guys are feeling ok, I'd still go to the parks. But at the first sign of trouble, if any, I'd probably head back to the room.

My princess has gotten sick on trips as well. Respectfully...I would tip an extra $10 on top of what I have been regularly have been tipping. Although it is well within mousekeeping's job description, personally I would feel responsible for the extra workload created. Where a room normally takes 20-30minutes to clean there is now an extra burden. To paraphrase a buddy of mine "in all things do unto others as you would have them do unto you"

They seemed to have handled it well so I would tip them well. I think a $10 above what you would normally tip is good like the previous poster said. I hope your son feels better in the morning.

Sorry to hear that it's very hard when someone is ill; please let us know you you both are doing!

One other thing is to mention is to make sure to let hotel staff know that it could be the flu, as in, could be contagious, so they can take appropriate measures both for themselves, and to prevent the spread of germs around the hotel rooms to other guests.

That being said, sounds to me like it could be over exhaustion, eating rich foods in the park, and tons of activity. Was it hot yesterday? Good luck with it all!:goodvibes

And yes, I also agree with the $10 tip toward hotel staff, on top of usual tip, for cleaning the mess. (You cleaned whatever you could first though, right?)

Your poor son, and poor mommy too!! I know how hard and stressful it can be when your child get's sick in a hotel room. In December we went to Vegas before DLR and DD3 one night just woke up and vomited all over the bed and herself. It was like 3 in the morning and we had two bed's so I just gave us a bath and moved us over to the other, which she vomited again on in the morning. In all housekeeping had to change our bedding 3 times. I felt so bad. They were so incredibly kind and understanding, they were obviously mom's and were more concerned about my daughter than the mess. DD I think ate something bad as it only lasted 24 hours, but what a time. I eventually asked for lots and lots of towels and just layed them under her on the bed so it wouldn't dirty the linens if it happened again. I can't remember what we tipped, but they were well taken care of.

I hope your son is better today. Maybe be careful of what he eats, kinda keep it bland if possible, and lots of liquids, water, ginger ale, crackers, banana's, that kinda thing. I hope it was just a one time thing :)

I think $10,15, or 20 would be the tip I would give, depending on how much clean up housekeeping did. I would think beds are going to be remade along with floor clean up. If there was a mess in bathroom mopping was probably done with a wipe down of area.

I have a strong stomach but I at no time would want to pick up and clean up after a stranger who had gotten sick. Would you?

I am sure it was during that cast members regular hours --- but----extra tip is in order for sure.

Only my thoughts -----and what I would do.

Patty

Hope little one is doing better. Kids getting sick on vacation should be banned---- only fun I say :)

Sorry to hear your son got sick. That's no fun. My DS just got over a horrible stomach flu but we were at home. That must be awful being sick on vacation.

I just wanted to add that if you can, you should try to make sure that the people who helped clean up the mess are the ones to get the extra tip since there might be different people working when you give the tip than who was there cleaning it up. Maybe the front desk can help make sure the tip goes to the right people.

Hope you all feel better soon! :goodvibes

This happened to us recently (but not at Disney). Luckily, DS threw up in the bed, and on himself, so we were able to gather up all the soiled bedding into a little ball. We had him sleeping on a rollaway, and the front desk quickly brought up a new one, and came to take the old one and the soiled linens away. For that, we tipped $5 (it was REALLY late at night, and they didn't even come into the room, so I felt that was appropriate).

In your case, I think an add'l $10 or 15 over the norm would be appropriate, particularly if they have to shampoo the carpets.

Here's how I view it...

What if you had to clean it all up? And how wonderful that they went to the store FOR you so you didn't have to. To ME, that is worth a lot. Tipping is a personal thing and it depends on how you feel about the "well, it's part of their job" thing, but to us, when something extraordinary occurs, we tip accordingly for it.

I would find the person who cleaned it and hand them a $20, cash.

Additionally, I would find out who the front desk person was that arranged to have someone go to the store for you and either tip them or write a very kind letter to their manager. That above-and-beyond thought and resulting errand made your world much better when worrying about and caring for a sick little one.

I hope you little boy is feeling better,
Dreams

Personally, I think it really depends on WHAT exactly housekeeping cleaned up for you.

$10 is WAY too low if they came into actual contact with bodily fluids. I'm sorry, but it's gross and $10 extra would just not make me feel any better if I were the housekeeper.;) Plus, you need to consider the fact that by cleaning up after your son, they have now infected themselves and possibly their entire family. So now the housekeeper is sick too...nope, sorry...$10 just isn't enough IMO.

Now...if all they did was things that they would "normally" do, like change the bed linens and bring new towels- then $10 is just fine.:thumbsup2

One of our girls had an accident overnight at a hotel once, we called the front desk when we realized and they brought up clean sheets and blankets, they also brought towels and covered the bed, them remade it for her. They told us the mattress would be taken care of in the morning and not to worry, we were very embarrassed as that normally didn't happen but I guess DD was just so crashed out asleep that it did. Anyway, when we got back the next day the hotel had completely switched out the mattress!!! We asked them to put a waterproof pad on it just in case and they did that as well, they were so great about it that we tipped the night staff extra, pretty sure we tipped $10 extra for the new bedmaking and we tipped an additional $20-30 for the new mattress. I can't remember exactly because DBF took care of it but we made sure we got the money to the right people. We also spoke with management and let them know we wanted to leave more but that's about all we had left. lol

DH took names and left envelopes for each individual at the front desk. Guest Relations had a whole "file" on us, so each time we called they knew exactly what was going on.

THE MESS- I am a neat nick and germaphobe, so anything is a mess to me. THere was a little on the carpet, and the bathroom a mess... but really it wasn't soooo terrible. DH quickly wiped up what he could and I cleaned up DS in the shower in the 2 minutes that it took housekeeping to get there. They did a pretty thorough cleaning job and I would have supsected another hotel might have left it there. They deep cleaning the next day was amazing and so comforting as I was so worried DH and I would get sick.

So thank goodness it wasn't really all that gross for housekeeping. I have never even dealt with such a mess with DS at home because I am so paranoid that even if I think he might have a sick tummy I take all precautions. I am just blown away about the staff's response and will never get over how great they were to us.

Guest Services even had a nurse call the room and sent over some disposable thermometers and directions and infomation to local clinics, etc. Seriously, if you are going to get sick, it was the place to get sick. The Grand was soooo wonderful. I won't go into the details... but let's just say they have compensated us well! And we are looking forward to our return visit.

You get what you pay for!
