3. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

Please read the above DIS board guideline and let's try to adhere to it.

If you see a thread or post that needs reporting instead of continuing the argument or disagreement use the report button.

Thank you

blue: WOW thats rare

or does it mean no

Bob: i just traded my inferno for 10 cents!

This is a serious question.

Sarcasm that is used with the following intent is against Disboard Guidelines:

"sarcastic: mean marked by bitterness and a power or will to cut or sting. SARCASTIC implies an intentional inflicting of pain by deriding, taunting, or ridiculing" Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Sarcasm may be used in a joking, light hearted manner. :thumbsup2

Lori

thank you Lori ;)

I was struggling with an example. :)

So you mean like:

:confused3: I'm an expert at trading. I just traded inferno for an esmeralda pin.
:cool2:: :lmao: Wow you're SO smart! :lmao:
:confused3: You're being sarcastic! You're saying I'm stupid!:sad1:

Is that what you mean?

Sarcasm, by definition, is always used to deride. It comes from the Greek words for "to tear flesh." Sarcasm tears at its object. Sarcasm will have hurtful intent and/or effect.

What you describe, LoriR, is "facetiousness" (or perhaps "irony") but it's not sarcasm.

But in the end, what the mods seem to be trying to prevent are the snide, rude comments made by members toward others.

And now, I need to get back to changing the world for the better.

We so don't have a problem with sarcasm here. Not at all! ;)

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

(I truly couldn't resist)

Actually, according to the dictionary, sarcasm can be a form of irony as well (as it uses ironic or satirical language). Yes both are intending to deride...but the "deriding" can either be malicious or lighthearted...and generally people know which one it is when they hear it or use it. One is intended as wit, the other is intended as a clear put down. As Lori stated, it's the intentional inflicting of pain form of sarcasm that DIS takes issue with (as would anyone else). When the sarcasm is used as a form of wit in a lighthearted topic, people generally don't view the comments as intent to inflict pain. And the person who said the comment generally meant it as a joke, not as an intent to inflict actual pain. Malicious sarcasm has the opposite effect.

If I could, I would stand up and applause at this post. But there are a few reasons I won't.

1. It would look completely stupid if I were to clap at the computer.

2. This post really only made a good point. lol, if every good point got an applause, the world would be the loudest thing on Earth... ;)

I think a difficult thing is the distinguishing between being facetious and being sarcastic. :upsidedow

Hey Too,
Me thinks you are gonna have to put a warning label on this warning label :lmao:

Actually.........
Sigh.

Look at the Greek root and tell me how sarcasm can be anything other than hurtful or malicious. I didn't take three years of Greek for my health, you know.

Yes, it's a form of irony-- the hurtful form.

Irony need not be hurtful; it is merely a rhetorical device with manifold uses. And sarcasm is the pain-inflicting use.

Satire is irony used against power. It is primarily scornful since it is power which hurts the satirist.

FrontierSuzy is spot on in her observation that distinguishing facetiousness and sarcasm can be difficult. That's why: 1) it's good to know your audience, and 2) be aware of the danger of facetiousness sans body language.

I'm convinced that the message of the mods here is:

Be facetious.

Be ironic.

Even be satirical, if you please.

But do NOT be sarcastic.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sarcasm

1. harsh or bitter derision or irony.
2. a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark

also

A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule

and

witty language used to convey insults or scorn

in addition

(the use of) unpleasant remarks intended to hurt a person's feelings

let me know when "lighthearted" sarcasm is not an insult.
and yes, that remark was sarcastic.

sarcastic:

adjective
expressing or expressive of ridicule that wounds

Using the "true" meaning of sarcasm, sarcastic remarks would never be allowed. However, it is very common for people to use this word to describe something they meant in a joking manner. While this may be an incorrect use of "sarcastic", the fact is, it is used in this way.

Bottom line - don't post in a manner that falls within the dictionary meaning of "sarcastic": mean marked by bitterness and a power or will to cut or sting. SARCASTIC implies an intentional inflicting of pain by deriding, taunting, or ridiculing" Merriam-Webster Dictionary

And as Ricks wrote:

Be facetious.

Be ironic.

Even be satirical, if you please.

But do NOT be sarcastic.

Semantics aside, please don't be mean, rude, disrespectful, etc...

We are here to share, help, and discuss VMK with others in our community, not to attack or degrade one another.

So basically mean sarcasm is:

: Don't you just love this picture of me?
: Oh wow you are SO beautiful.
:eek:::sad1:

VS.
Joking sarcasm:

:cutie:: Of course I'll give you a heart chair. But not for free.
: Oh I can just feel the love now!:rotfl:

I think I figured it out. Am I right?

Maybe a good rule to follow would be:
1. think of others feelings prior to responding to/ or writing a post.
2. review what u have written to see if it has any harsh or cutting remarks~~~Directed to a specific person.
3. refer to #1.

We deal with enough sarcasm in our daily lives , we do not need to have a person that does not truly know us passing judgement!
