Okay I have asked friends and such and tried to find the answer to this question elsewhere so I didn't look like a dummy here....but nobody knows so here goes.

What is a grooms cake and when/what do we do with it?

That's not a dumb question! :p

I'm actually not quite sure...I believe it's a southern tradition (so maybe some of our Southern Belles :teeth: can shed some light?).

I may be wrong, but basically I think it's more of a fun, non-traditional type of cake made especially for the groom (ie, it's the one thing HE gets to have some say in!! :rotfl: ). I believe it's served at the reception...but I think I've heard of it being served at the rehearsal dinner as well??

Hope that helps somewhat...

Anyone else have any REAL knowledge of groom's cakes??

Okay, I should have done this in the first place but here is what I found when I did a google search:

Having its roots in Southern tradition, the groom’s cake has been around for quite some time and is making a fashionable comeback on the wedding scene.

Traditionally, a groom’s cake was sliced and boxed for the unmarried girls attending the wedding to take home and place under their pillows in hopes that the man they dreamed of would be their future husband. Groom’s Cake has come along way since then. Today the cake is meant to be a reflection of the groom’s interests, whether it be one of his hobbies, favorite sport, alma mater, profession, etc..

It’s a personal choice when to serve the cake - either at the rehearsal dinner, as an alternate dessert with the wedding cake, or as a late night dessert for the wedding party. Just because primarily groom cakes tend to be a fruit cake or a chocolate cake shouldn’t dictate what the bride and groom should have. Obviously being named "Groom’s Cake" it should be a flavor and theme that the groom enjoys.

I guess I was on the right track...

Thanks so much for clearing that up for us!!!!

It now makes perfect sense and sounds like a great idea!! Wonder why I didn't think of googling it??? :confused3 :teeth: :confused3

I've been to two weddings that had groom's cakes. My friend here in FL had a big wedding with a small reception in the church hall afterwards and a huge reception at a hotel later at night. At the church reception they had a groom's cake, it was made out like a Gator football field with Albert and Alberta (UF's mascots) for the bride and groom (they both graduated from UF). The other was my cousin in NY. At the reception they had a sheet cake covered in chocolate with a fireman theme (my cousin was a NY fireman and loves chocolate) and that was the groom's cake.

I think it's just a non-traditional cake that reflects the groom more (if he likes Nascar, for instance, it could have a race car theme; or if he's a muscian it could be shaped like a guitar or something).

HTH!!

I told my DF about the Grooms cake... He was really excited b/c its something that he can choose all on his own... B/c if you stop to think about it we get to pick out everything... So its a little something for them.. Not sure what my DF will choose.. probably is fav. miami team :surfweb:

I must admit when i mentioned a personal cake for my Df a smile appeared on his face. Sometimes i think men feel a little left out when it comes to all the planning, this is a little something all for them.

God knows what Mark my Df will want. Hes a massive football (soccer in America) fan of a team called Tottenham Hotspur, but then a gain he loves his music ie Metallica,Foo Fighters :rockband: . Oh yeah he has a thing for Chip & Dale, we have a guinea pig(use to have two) which he associates with them so thats another possibility.

Still i think its a fantastic idea as i guess us girls really get to decide on the wedding cake. :woohoo:

Thanks everyone for enlightening me!! Future Df is as much a disney freak as I so I am sure he would choose something disneylike given the opportunity!

It is nice that he will get to choose something.....after submitting his choice for approval first of course!
(just kidding--hi honey :wave2: )
