Warning: Don't buy liquor in port if using onboard airline check in

Wanted to point this out on its own.

If you buy liquor in port, DCL holds it for you. The problem is that they don't allow you to pick it up until disembarkation morning. Most other cruiselines allow you to do so the night prior.

If you are on a participating airline, you set out your bags the night before and don't see them until your home airport.

You cannot carry liquor on the plane.

Hence, the dilemma.

Our friends ran into this. They used onboard check-in, then had no place to put their bottle on the way to the airport for the flight home. Since we stayed in Orlando an extra day, we wound up with their bottle of White Hennesy.

Hopefully, DCL realizes the pickle and resolves the issue, at least for those in this situation. Very inconvenient.

There appear to be many teething problems with the new policy. I have to say, whilst you will always expect some kind of minor issues, one would have hoped that DCL would consider the ramifications of the new policy introduction prior to the effective date. I am sure many of the issues will be ironed out eventually but, yes, it is worth being aware in the meantime.

I am pretty sure DCL addressed this in their early statements about the new policy. I recall reading something to the effect of "you may not want to use OAC program if you plan on purchasing alcohol duty free onboard or in ports". So, I think they know it would be a problem and basically say don't buy if you want to use OAC program.

At least that is my take on it. I guess you could leave one checked bag held back with you and then check it at the airport if you want to pack it before the flight.

Obviously our friends missed that. We weren't looking since we didn't purchase anything.

However, we are all well-seasoned cruisers on various lines, and thus far, DCL is the only line that doesn't allow you to pick up your liquor the night before. Not sure what the harm would be letting guests pick up liquor say after 8pm so they could pack it accordingly. So much for being in line with the industry standard, I guess.

Because we might drink it all and pass out on the ground and then our minor children will call Guest Services onboard about mommy and daddy being passed out. (somehow it doesn't happen on all the other lines, but it does on DCL!)

Oh man... that one CM who said that that was the reason for the booze policy, to either a Dis'er or someone a Dis'er read, will go down in infamy for saying such nonsense... :)

I heard it first hand. The CM said it during a rum tasting on the Fantasy. I took it with a grain of salt :)

BTW, on our cruise, when discussing the new policy with a bartender, he cited minor girls being given alcohol as the reason for the policy change.
