I bought a package earlier today and popped one into my mouth tonight. Right after eating it, it became very spicy in my mouth, like pepper or something. Mystified, I ate another one to make sure; it was worse! Now, 30 minutes later, my tongue is still burning. Thank heavens my kids didn't eat them first (I bought them for a party tomorrow). They are either tainted or mis-manufactured, or something.

They are a package of Christmas colored miniatures, purchased at Target, in the Charlotte, NC area.

I'll be calling the FDA tomorrow to make a report and hopefully warn others.

I would like to encourage you to go the ER - and bring the PB cups. Thats not right - IMHO you need to let someone know right away.

I had some of the mini ones today with the Christmas colors, no problem up here. I would definitely wonder what's up with your batch! Hershey usually has a phone # on there to call too.

You should call Hershey, ASAP. They need to know so they can check their manufacturing records and issue a recall if necessary. Also call the FDA if that makes you feel better, but call the number on that bag NOW! I was in QA in the food industry for 11 years, I know how important it is that the manufacturer finds out about this in a timely manner.

even if you don't have a history you can develop allergies at any time. please get checked by your dr ASAP.

Hi, here's an update and all I can say is, it's tough to be a crusader.

I didn't go to the ER last night as it didn't seem life threatening. The first thing I looked at was the package to call Hershey, but their customer service hours are only 9-4 ET, so I had to wait until today to call. They gave me a bit of the runaround, said they'd look into it, and I'd hear back in 7-10 days. They are not even going to do an analysis of the candy in my package and said they've had no other similar complaints.

I am really concerned that children are going to eat these and have their mouth burn (I originally purchased the candy for a gingerbread making party I'm hosting this afternoon for a bunch of neighborhood kids; it makes me shudder). My tongue, throat, esophagus still feel odd today, like a reisidual burning sensation. I'm also concerned as a nursing mother that if I ingested some chemical that it could get to the baby, so will probably pump and dump the next 48 hours to be on the safe side.

I left my name and number with the FDA in order to make a report with them too. I also called the store manager of my Target and told him what had happened; he was really on top of things and said he'd remove the product from the shelves right away. I'm glad about that at least.

FWIW, I purchased a similar package last week at an area Wal-Mart, ate most of it (I love pb cups, they are my downfall among all the gingerbread candy!!) and they were fine. Far different than what happened last night. Just make sure you check them out before letting your kids eat them, this is my plea. The ones in my package looked fine, and upon first bite tasted good. It was as I continued to chew that the fiery flavor became pronounced.

Remember, you heard it on the DIS first. :surfweb: Take care.

I am glad you made all those calls but make sure you also go to the dr to have your throat and mouth looked at.

I agree. What may be "spicy" to you might actually be something really bad. Seriously you need to get yourself to the ER or at least your doctor ASAP to get looked at.

That's terrible. Thanks for the warning. I wonder what could make a peanut butter cup do that to your mouth. I would go to the doctor if you are still feeling a burning sensation by tomorrow.

Wait, you aren't still serving these to people are you? You should keep the bag for the FDA in case they need to run tests. Or take them to the doctor with you. What was the date code on the package so we can avoid purchasing any from the same lot?

The only thing I can think of that might cause a burning sensation like that might be some cross contamination by cleaning chemicals used in the plant. If that is the case, you need to be seen by a doctor.

Glad to hear that the Target manager did the right thing and removed the product from the shelves. That's exactly what should have happened.

I think she meant OTHER children whose parents may buy these unknowingly. She had purchased them with the intent to use them on the Gingerbread house;)

I do agree about the cross contamination. That was my first thought when reading this. I would definitely have myself to a Dr. ASAP. If it is a chemical, you could be in a lot of danger. I would rather play it safe than to pay for it later.

Are you kidding . . . and you havent gone to the doctor yet. I hope you didnt nurse your baby last night - Call me a drama queen - you wouldnt be the first - but I have children - I live by the rule - better safe than sorry. How do you know somone didn't tamper with the bag??? I would like to encourage you to get checked out for the sake of your children. I would also like to encourage you to bring your PB cups to the police station right now and make noise until someone listens. You wont though - sounds like you have reconciled with being a victim of lord knows what, I wish you luck and good health - Whip

Oh, OK. I guess I just read it too fast. I didn't think anyone would be serving these knowing there was something wrong with them, but it was written weirdly.

Man oh man guess what i was doing while reading this yes eating minature reese's p-nut butter cups int he christmas paper. No burning here- I wouldn't mess around with this if I were you-get to the doc, er or urgent care center. something is not right with those p-nut butter cups you bought. Hard to say if it came from the plant, or if they were tampered with somewhere along the line. Dont mess around seek medical help ASAP.

Hey which target? I am in the charlotte area and have a bag of these too. Don't won't to eat them and have a burning tongue!

I think you are being a little too hard on the op here. Mabye she doesn't have insurance and it would be too expensive to see a doctor?? We don't know what her situation is and we all try to do the best we can, and have to make the decisions that are best for us at the time. If indeed it is cross comtamination of cleaning products ect. There is little to nothing that can be done at this point about it. Any damage has already been done and would most likely be localized to the mouth and throat is she has no other symptoms as of yet. It would not pose a hazard to the baby. If it was contaminated with anything more serious she would know by now. I think you are being unecessairly alarmist sometimes "making noise untill someone listens" does more harm than good. If you are complaining about one thing or another all the time eventually no one takes you seriously. I tend to go by the rule: fight the fights that need fighting and let the little things go. It sounds like this is over and there is no need for anyone to panic.

I had some Reese's peanut butter cups a couple of years ago that also burned my mouth. I think there is a substance in the recipe that can burn if used in too large a proportion. It only takes a little mistake during manufacturing to cause a problem. I just got rid of the rest of the bag. I've eaten others since with no problem.
