Just back from our trip to WDW. I had purchased a Mickey Christmas ornament that was shaped like a light bulb and was a snow globe. I had packed it with another fragile ornament in my carry on bag in hopes to avoid it being damaged. When going through security at MCO they discovered it and told me I couldn't carry it on board with me. WHAT!, but it's just an ornament! Doesn't matter, it has liquid inside. My choice was to go back to the ticket desk and try to check it into my luggage or have them box it up for me or I could surrender it. Lucky for me I had enough time to go back and have them box it up for me. The security lady had told me that just the previous day someone had a large snow globe in their carry on bag and they had no choice but to surrender it. That would have broken my heart. So pack them safely in your luggage or have WDW ship them to your home if you don't want to loose them.

:confused3 a snow globe. how on earth can that be any harm? they are getting ridiculous. glade you didn't have to give it up. would make me so :furious: just think of all the wonderful items that the airport employees collect. wonder if they take them home after their shifts?

It isn't the snowglobe that poses a threat, but the liquid inside. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I agree with Captain_Hook. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Liquid is liquid and you're not allowed to carry any liquids on board.

Oy vey - what will TSA think of next? :sad2:
The Grinch is back in town and his name is Chertoff
And actually, you can carry on liquids . . . certain ones, in certain ciircumstances i certain containers are deemed not hazardous.

JMO still think they are going overboard with a snow globe. I wouldn't feel unsafe if someone had one on board.

I agree in thought it seems silly...but who knows what terrorists might do to complete their missions. :sad2: I think I'd rather be safe than sorry...even if the item is Disney and looks normal...you never know.

To the OP - I'm so glad you got to keep your item, but sorry you had to go through so much hoohaa over it. Thanks for posting about it so we know!

Did you ever see the movie Unfaithful , starring Diane Lane and Richard Geer? In the movie, Richard Geer kills his wife's lover with a snowglobe. Bashed him right over the head , the guy dies and Richard Geer's is left holding a snowglobe filled with blood. Yuk!

I am confused to why people feel safer flying with no snowglobes. :confused3

This is like the zero tolerance policy for drugs at school(no Halls or Sucrets) and does not make any sense to me.

Better safe than sorry? That just shows stupidity on our part. If I was a terrorist I would be more worried by people that took actual threats seriously than TWA agents taking snowglobes and juice boxes from toddlers.

And yes, I saw the Richard Gere movie...great scene! :thumbsup2

we just got home last night and there was a lady in the gift shop who bought a snow globe and didnt' know she couldn't take it on the plane she was swearing at the clerk the whole time.....how much to ship it home, etc. I think she just returned it. :confused3 anything liquid, mustard packets, ice cream, smoothies, etc. not allowed. the lady was telling the clerk my plane leaves in 4 mins. I thought yeah right! :confused3

I totally agree with what you said. It seems only one airline in the world gets airline security . Too bad they don't fly to Disney. :) You actually get REAL steak knives with your food!

Another DISser the other day also Posted about a childs sippy cup that had the liquid and little stars floating around in it. It was empty but the liquid in the walls of the cup was the problem.

Thanks to the OP for pointing out this issue. It's the kind of tip that can come in handy. I never would have thought of it until the time the TSA bagged me.

BTW, you can question whether they should allow liquids, but if there is going to be a rule against liquids, why would you make an exception for snowglobes? If liquids are deemed to be dangerous you can't allow them just because it's in a snowglobe.

I totally agree. I'd rather they allowed "approved" bottles of water (maybe purchased past security) than snowglobes.

Great thread, OP :thumbsup2 I never would have thought about it. I am on the side of liquid is liquid, though. It does seem trivial, but who would ever have thought that Gatorade or baby formula would be an actual threat.

Airport security, though, are making out like bandits! They may have tightened up on them but when this first started, the security folks had piles of surrendered items and were making swap deals in front of everyone (very inappropriate IMO AND they need to be more attentive to their job).

At first I was a little ticked off that they would take this liquid ban so far but DH(a little paranoid) quickly reminded me that if a terrorist knew that all the liquid they needed would fit into a small ornament and was permitted on board, it would be very easy for them to manufacture something that looks legit. I quickly came to my senses and agreed. I am just happy I didn't have to surrender it and I got it back home in one piece, but Disney maybe should advertise this info at point of purchase.

I think that the liquid ban is a reaction, not prevention. Apparently, it is a good tactic for the airline industry from the posts here. People feel safer flying when they immediately ban items(think knitting needles in the past/snowglobes now) similar to what terrorists had used. Although I personally don't feel any safer with that approach, if it keeps the airlines in business I guess it's not all for nothing. But no way I feel any safer. JMO.

To the OP, sorry you had to go through that. Next time, you may want to consider shipping something like that. If you buy it in a WDW shop, they will ship it to your home. If it is being shipped out of the state of Florida, you pay no sales tax. That usually pretty much offsets the price of the shipping. You don't have to worry about getting your purchase home. Should the item break during shipping, Disney will ship another one.

The whole problem with the rationale of restricting everything that could remotely be a threat is that somebody is going to get more creative like rolling up a piece of paper until it is a very small point and threatening to blind a flight attendant or using their belt to choke one and before too long we're going to have to check our clothes at the gate and wear only our undies on board or worse yet, hospital gowns.

They should redesign planes so that the crew cabin is not accessible from the rest of the plane to prevent hi-jackings and let the cabin take thier chances.

Everytime we get afraid the terrorists win a little more as the purpose of terrorists is to create terror.
