Warning about resort pools

Thank you for informing us!!we will be at POR in a couples days.

I remember seeing that 20/20 years ago. I will never forget it and I am always extra careful at public pools since then. It was so sad and I am sorry to hear that it has happened again in Minnesota. I hope Disney will be more watchful of their pools vacuums.

It can not only happen in pools but in hot tubs as well. Some of the older ones hove only one filter pipe below the water line so the suction is very strong. One little girl I read about got her hair caught up in it and drowned. I remember reading about this several years ago. When we bought ours we made sure it had three so the suction on one would not be very strong. If in the market, ask about the pressure on the suction pipes and how many they have!!...smjj

This can happen at any pool. It happened to us a few weeks ago at a condo pool where we were staying. The hole is actually where they plug the vacuum in that then goes around the bottom of the pool cleaning it. It is usually a half foot or so below the water line. They (the cleaners) are suppose to turn it on when they plug the vacuum in and then turn it off when they are finished. If they don't, the suction in that hole is incredible. My brother ended up with a big mark on his back - we discovered it when he learning up against it. I didn't really believe him so I put my hand on it and I couldn't believe the suction. It really hurt. I hate to think of a small child putting their finger in there. We informed the staff and they closed the pool immediately. They seemed perplexed at first but then figured out what is was. I will be more aware of this in the future. It was very disconcerting!

This is extremely dangerous. If I were you, I would put this in writing to Disney. There was a 20/20 episode about pool vacuums and drains--children can be caught in them and drown, and can even be disemboweled by them if they sit on them. Not to sound alarmist or disgusting, but children have died this way.

Don't take it lightly--a letter to management with the date and time noted is in order. It is lucky no one was hurt.

Nothing like a "Disembowelment" to increace publicity for your resort. I can just see the headlines "Disembowelment the Disney way!"

OMG, thanks for the warning and thanks for reporting it to management. Yikes, that's a terrible mistake for them to make.

Glad your DD is ok.
