Ok here is my new plan.... NO car...all by public transit....
Want to be in Huntington Beach on May 1st to tour around and do whatever, but then be in Disneyland on May 2nd just for the one day.

What area is the best place to stay in for this? I am not worried about a shuttle to disney every half hour - we would go in the morning and go back to the hotel at closing....I am going to priceline a hotel - what area should I be looking at staying in to make this easy?

I would think it would be easier for you to choose either Huntington Beach or the Disneyland area, not in between. This would allow at least one day of little to no travel time.

If you are going to use priceline, the Disneyland area will yield more choices. The Hyatt resort in Huntington Beach hasn't been coming up much on the biddingfortravel.com board and you would most likely wind up in Newport Beach instead. Nobody has reported receiving anything lower than resort level so it's a little risky, IMO, to go any lower than that. There are some dives in and around Huntington Beach you wouldn't want to stay in plus to get anything lower than resort level, you'd have to bid in the Seal Beach/Huntington Beach area. This means you could wind up in Seal Beach.
