For me, it was one of my highlights of our 5 trips to WDW! I looked forward to this from the day we booked it and was not disappointed. My DW also enjoyed it but isn't into hi-tech gadgets as much as me so I probably enjoyed it more. The price does come to around $68 with a AAA or AP discount. From experience, if using a discount, let the CM know right up front when making the ressie. I didn't and for some reason, she had to redo all of my information when she found out I was using a AAA discount.
I would probably suggest the 9:30 tour. We did the 8:30 tour thinking we would have no problem getting there from POR by 8:15. Not so. The first bus to EPCOT didn't show up at our depot until 8:10 and we didn't arrive at EPCOT until almost 8:25. We were concerned that we would lose our ressie, and our money, if we were late. Fortunately, that didn't happen although we were a few minutes late.
The first hour of the tour is spent in Innoventions learning about the HT and getting comfortable "driving" it. The HT is an incredible device. These models only go 5 mph, not the usual 12 mph, and the training is excellent so everyone is pretty comfortable for the 2nd hour, which is spent cruising around the WS. We did have a couple "single" tourers with our group so your DH should be comfortable doing this alone.
As for the tour of the WS, it does last about 1 hour and the WS doesn't open until 11:00 so it is pretty much free of human obstacles for the most part. This is especially true of the 8:30 tour which ends around 10:30, before the WS opens. Those touring ride in single file with CM's in the front and back of the line. They cruise around and through various countries in the WS before getting to China. At that point, there is a "free period" of about 15 minutes when they get to ride around on their own within certain boundaries. At this point, the CM's will gladly take photos, so have your DH take a camera. Also, when we toured, a couple non-touring relatives were allowed into the training area to take video and photos so, if you ask nicely, you might get to do the same.
A very nice commemorative pin is given to all the tourers at the end of the tour.
My only disappointment was that the tour didn't last longer! I would definitely do this again.
This is a very popular tour. Only 10 ressies are taken for each one, 8:30 and 9:30, so it would be best to reserve as soon as possible and hope for good weather.
