Hello,

DH & I was watching the Travel channel and the 1 thing on their top 10 list was to each conch, especially the pistol. Does anyone know where in Nassau we can get this? Also, has anyone ever tried it? I tried doing a search on here and google but could not find anything.

I can tell you that my husband really enjoyed eating Conch. He had some everyday for 6 days. As far as where to get it, I can"t help with that. We got it when we stayed at the Sandals Beach Resort there. I just found this website, If you go to www.nassauparadiseisland.com, I just found some menus with Conch on them. Good luck and I hope that this helps.

We went over to the fish fry on Arawak Cay and ate at Goldies. The conch salad was awsome. I think Twin Brothers has a good reputation too. This place is full of locals so you know it must be good. Don't expect anything fancy.
There are lots of restaurants there to choose from. You can google it. There is also a place called the conch store or something like that that is closer to the port buy fish fry is not very far either.

We've been to Conch Fritters twice; it's a nice, small, clean, friendly restaurant. A few blocks from the pier - make your way straight to King Street (about 2 blocks), then turn right and go about 2-3 blocks to cross Baillou-Hill. King street turns into Bay Street now. It's a big, busy intersection. Conch Fritters is the second or third establishment on your left (south side) just after you cross over. Open area, can't miss it. IIRC it is across the street from the Hilton.

My advice - skip Conch Fritters and visit Imperial Takeaway - it is literally next door to Conch Fritters (right behind the Colonial Hilton) and get cracked conch there instead.

Imperial is a tiny local spot (ok, my DH calls it a "dive") - and you'll probably be the only non-locals there, as we were two weeks ago...sigh.

A cracked conch platter (comes with fries) is 8.50. Hot and delicious. There are about six tables there, so you can eat in (they have a variety of canned sodas available) and it is about a 12 minute walk from the DCL dock.

Don't ask for salt, either. They don't have any.

I can see a cracked conch taste test challenge in our future. What a way to go!

Thanks everyone for your information/suggestions. I guess I will have to choose either Conch Fritters or Imperial Takeaway. And glad to see it is close to the port. i really don't want to travel around Nassau.

just curious, is the cracked conch cooked? Is it steamed or broiled like crab, or is it fried, or raw? I'm guessing conch fritters are fried.

Hello..

Hey my bride and I love to travel around and try little hole in the wall food places.. (Thanks to both Adam and Guy I am a much much bigger man then I once was.:rotfl:)

Anyhooo saw the conch fritter eating contest down in Key west .. Want to try them..

BUT how good are they really. Acquired taste??? Tastes like Chicken??? Like chewy clams???

The reason I ask is my basic diner theory is that if it was really fantastic like say lobster or French fries, you would find it everywhere.

So just asking those who have partook how do they taste????

By they way We are going to nassau in October and will be doing the Conch challenge

Good questions about the taste and how cracked conch is typically prepared.

In our experience, conch fritters and cracked conch were fried. The fritters can vary in size, depending upon where you go, but are basically slightly smaller than ping pong balls and are mostly bread filler with some minced/chopped conch mixed in. Think of a chicken croquette sphere, rather than a chicken finger... (FWIW - I was disappointed in the conch fritters I tried on this recent trip at Fulton's in Downtown Disney. They were big and very/too moist and gummy in the center - but the outsides were very dark from the fryer. I think there were five in the appetizer, but I couldn't/didn't eat more than two...)

Cracked conch we had in Nassau was fried, but it was just the meat in a bread/crumb coating. Not as chewy as "chewy clams", Indy, but to me, more like a good calamari. (I don't care for fried clams - most are too chewy/rubbery for me.)

Two of us shared one Imperial Takeaway order and walked away happy. (Except for wishing for a tiny dash of salt! - but that might be due to the rather heavy salting of the Dream foods that we were getting used to). It is a busy little place, with many local workers coming in to pick up takeout orders. Conch Fritters next door (right on the corner) is attractive and at least four times the size of Imperial. Also, "Linda's stand" at the far (right) end of the dock building all cruise passengers must walk through to get on and off the ship has conch dishes, but wasn't open on our three Nassau days lately because we had the misfortune to be there right before and right after Irene...ugh! Other online posters also say they love Fishlips, but we didn't get there. We wanted to stay close to the ship and get back to enjoy the Dream...

A conch challenge would be so much fun! If any of you do one, post back!

When we had the cracked conch at Conch Fritters, it was more of a stew kind of dish, not a fried/bread crumby thing. Totally delish!

I am not a huge fan of the fried types of conch. My favorite is conch salad. Once in the Turks and Caicos we chartered a boat for the day and my dh and the boat driver picked up conch from the bottom of the ocean, brought them up and the guy prepared the conch salad right there on the boat for lunch. Chopped it up, squeezed on lime, added tomatoes, onions, and peppers. That was it I think. Delish.

OK Ok this is getting more and more enticing... But now more complicated..

Considering that we are getting there via a Disney Cruise ship the scope of the challenge must be limited.. I think one can test 2 places "Conch Fritters" and "Imperial Takeaway" to work in Fishlips (God, love the name) just may be to much..

But I am confused what to compare..

Now the Conch Fritters must be compared...

But what other type of Conch should be on that list..???

Do both places also serve Cracked Conch??

Should the challenge compare The Cracked Conch???

Now the good news is we are doing a B2b so will have 2 stops..

OMG, I just finished my lunch and now I want conch!

We're doing a B2B, too. I think we'll compare Conch Fritters and Imperial Cafeteria first and then compare the winner with Fishlips. :lmao:

in Nassau- Goldies or Poop deck are the best place for all conch!!!! :worship:
I prefer Conch salad any day, its cold and delish!!!!:thumbsup2

cracked conch is fried and awesome!!!usually looks like chicken tenders but a little chewier....

conch fritters are an awesome appetizer the are little fried balls, usually conch onion pepper mixed in pancake batter and fried.....

*****NOTE THIS********* if u do not like super spicy make sure u tell them NO GOAT PEPPER------- bahamaians use this to spice it up and its way hotter than wasabi!!

You guys are funny! :rotfl2: You're making me want to go back - and we just got home!

Conch Fritters has conch fritters and cracked conch.
Linda's tiny stand in the dock building also has both, (I think) when she's open. (If anyone really wants to taste conch in Nassau and only wants to take the minimum number of steps away from the ship, this is your best bet...)
Imperial Takeaway only has cracked conch (but other stuff on their menu, too.) But, they do offer the canned Goombay Punch, in addition to Coke, Sprite, root beer, etc. YUM! Non-alcoholic pineapply soda famous in the Bahamas...

A quick anecdote from our recent visit to Imperial -
We were sitting there, tucking into our styrofoam trough of cracked conch and fries and chatting with locals about Hurricane Irene. While we're there, a steady stream of locals pick up their orders and leave with their bags, including one woman office worker who looks like she's picking up enough for a small group. A teen emerges from behind the order/pickup counter (two windows in the back wall) and sloooooooowly starts emptying the trashcan near the tables. Suddenly, the women behind the windows start yelling to the teen to "go get that woman" - the office worker - who has just left - "she's left one bag behind." (She's been out the door for about 15 seconds.) He glances up and says "Naw" and returns his attention to his trash can. The women exclaim loudly and race out from the back with the bag - just in time to bump into the returning woman who is back at the doorway and has realized she's missing something. The woman cluck and fuss at the teen, who seems unfazed. Even the locals were chuckling and shaking their heads at him!

If you do go to Imperial - remember it is a LOCAL place and not gussied up (AT ALL) for the tourists. We enjoy finding places like this when we travel, but not everyone does...

Have fun with your taste tests! The just-caught conch for the cold salad sounds divine!
